5800X3D all the way, it is still a great gaming CPU, also the 4080 hardly seems worth it, based on Nvidia's own benchmark on the press released stuff.

it is, but it's still commanding a premium and the new stuff beats it pretty much for the same price.  If you want to talk entire rig cost, you may have an argument, but deals abound.  5800x3D is nice, can't lie.  Not sure I'd buy one new though, I did a lot of looking and asking and passed on it.

I mean he's upgrading from a 2600x (based on his PC specs on the signature), so he already has the board and RAM. So 5800X3D is a better choice here.

Depending on his resolution, especially if he buys a 4080... He may play at 4K.  Cpu bound then.

5800x3d is a good choice but what about the 5800x or 5900x even?

If in 4K, do you mean GPU bound?

What does it matter, given the two choices he presented us, the better choice is the 5800X3D with 4080, 7700X with 3080 is inferior compared to the other choice.

And 5900X's price is very close to 5800X3D, might as well go with 5800X3D no? Unless he also do productivity workload, which he didn't say and he picked 5800X3D, I'd assume he just wants to game with it.

And 5800X for gaming is not a good buy, 5600X is either neck and neck or only a bit slower in gaming benchmarks and cost about 40% less.
