For working with known game engines like unreal engine 4 or cry engine 3. which card would be a better performer?  I am not a game developer and to be fair I do not know much about development but my interest is high and Seeing as I will be buying a gpu soon and the licencing price on these engines doesn't seem too bad i would just like to get the hardware that would be better suited for these applications.

Go for the 780 I think, you shall be pleased with performance.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

Professional game devs would use both, for testing that is.

But for actual development, go with the 780.

I'm an NVIDIA fan, however there's no denying the performance of the AMD R9 290. Also having a 512-bit memory bus with 4GB of vRAM I think would certainly help in game development because you never know how much vRAM you're going to need/require.

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

I know that the bus and 1gig frame buffer advantage is a plus but seeing that I am in Jamaica (tropical climate) so you can imagine that its hot enough here as it is and my old gpu caught fire at much lower temperatures i think i might be leaning towards the 780 since the higher speed memory should be able to make up if even a little bit for the narrower bus.

Fair enough I say. NVIDIA GPUs are quite good. You can't fault them. :D

The R9 290 is cheaper in most parts of the world and performs just the same, as long as you don't use a reference cooler.

Also, the 780 is about the same price as the 290X, which performs much better.

For UE4 engine, go for GTX780 because it use Nvidia Gamework libraries. You can't test that with AMD card. A good developer will use card from both camp though.

And for the cry engine are there any other amd perks apart from mantle, because to be frank I am the least bit interested with mantle since the announcement of dx12.

Or get the R9-290x, signup for AMD Mantle private beta program here and get an early start about DX12 because Mantle and DX12 have so much in common, according to AMD rep at GDC last month.

GTX 780 is better IMO because it has far better specs and features...

Please elaborate.
