Video converting

So I have a bunch of videos on a NAS system that i would like to convert to smaller file size to save on space. 

At this time i have Wondershare UniConverter 13 to do the converting of the videos. (or do you suggest a different program)

Would it be better to transfer the files to the computer I am going to do the video conversation on or do it via the network. I do have a 10GB network these two systems are connected to.

It shouldn't matter if its local or on a network drive. The disk performance in both setups will be fast enough to not be an issue.

I've had a great experience with VideoProc converter. If I where you I'd use the trial, then uninstall it once you've finished converting.

Handbrake. Or if you want to automate as much as possible, FFMPEG.
