I am trying to setup a plex server but instead of buying and ripping DvD and Blu Rays i’d rather buy movies and tv shows on itunes and just convert them over to plex. So question is what is the easier less cumbersome way to do it? Any tips and help be greatly appreciate it thanks in advance

I wouldn't suggest you Plex. It got deteriorated over recent years and now it's full of bloatware and ads. I would suggest you to subscribe to Netflix. It's not that expensive, but at least you don't get ads and get lots of content.

Much of the bloat and ads can be circumvented by choosing your pinned content and especially by purchasing plex pass.  Ive been a plex pass holder since 2014 and have loved some of the implementation of new features and hated others.

I run Jellyfin and Plex side by side in docker containers on my UnRaid machine and while I like where Jellyfin is going, its not quite as polished as it needs to be for me to ditch Plex altogether.

Just subscribing to Netflix though, is the antithesis of having your own media server.  Having your own server provides you with the means to cultivate your own preferences all into one location where you can access them as many times and for as long as you wish to.  Netflix on the other hand, does have some entertaining content, it is by no means complete for every genre or category of video based entertainment and there is no guarantee that what you watch today will be available tomorrow.

As a Plex newbie, this is the first I have heard of Jellyfin, and I'm intrigued. I'll be downloading to check it out and compare. Just got my GF on Plex though, so it may be tricky to get her to jump to another media app

Plex's ads don't impact him for what he's asking to accomplish.  Ads do not show up on the Home screen or in your own content.  Also, Plex Pass as mentioned negates the ads as well, and $5 a month or $40 annually is easy to swallow.

I've tried Jellyfin and a few others.  None are as easy to use and look as good as Plex, IMO.  Being able to simply load Plex app on smart TVs and set top devices and go is perfect.

1. Acquire content

2. Save in folder

3. Scan library for new media (or wait for the auto scan to do it)

4. Watch

I'm not sure why the thread title even mentions plex as the question the OP is asking was about stripping DRM. Plex just happens to be what they want to play them on but it could have been any player/DLNA server.

Plex and Netflix are intrinsically completely seperate things. Netflix unless you are in some way recording it or if you mean the dvd rental burn the disc you can't really own anything on Netflix. Whereas with Plex or other media servers that you might be locally hosting you have more control over your content.

I would suggest Jellyfin over Plex. You get free hardware acceleration (Plex has it but it's locked behind a paywall), and you don't have to connect to their servers to run your media. And I believe Plex just recently had a data breach.

Yeah, I love how Netflix carries my favorite shows Friends and The Office so I can stream them at any time!  Oh wait...

Not trying to rag on Netflix (I'm a subscriber) but it's not remotely the same type of service as Plex.  Everything on a streaming service is fleeting - it's only a matter of time until one of your favorite movies or shows gets pulled.  Whether that be from not wanting to pay / renew the rights to the show, or a bunch of people on Twitter get riled up about a controversial scene and force the streaming company to take it down.

Any content that is produced buy Netflix stays there forever and Netflix has a lot of interesting shows movies.

Even that isn't true.  They have removed content in the past if there was enough public pressure / controversy around it.  That will only continue as their own internally produced library grows.

Permanence as a concept does not exist on a streaming service.  The idea of "forever" and a streaming service doesn't make sense.  The content is there:

  • as long as you continue to pay your monthly subscription fee (which will continue to go up)
  • as long as the streaming company deems it is still profitable to host that content and serve it to you
  • as long as the streaming company doesn't bend to public pressure to pull the content down

IE- NOT forever at all because it is completely dependent on you continuing to pay more money indefinitely and hope that the streaming company keeps the content online.

I'd also argue most Netflix content is lousy and they have a history of abandoning most of their shows after 2 seasons, but that's just my opinion.

This is all off-topic because a streaming service vs a self-hosted media server are completely different concepts.

Don't forget that content leaves Netflix when their contract runs out.  They don't keep most of it, they enter into a designated timeframe contract with Warner Brothers or Paramount for parts of their catalog for a given price.

Netflix only owns their own content, nothing more.
