Can you use non-ECC Ram in a Server

Playzd
Go to solution Solved by Needfuldoer,

I don't see why not, but I think capacity is limited. You also can't mix ECC and non-ECC.

If you already own the RAM anyway, just give it a try. The worst thing that can happen is it doesn't work.

Registered ECC DDR4 is getting cheaper and cheaper secondhand, too. If you're buying that RAM, you could probably get twice as much (or more) from eBay for the same price.

Hi,
I'm building a server and i don't know if i can use Crucial CT16G4DFD824A. Server that i'm gonna build is ProLiant DL380 Gen9, and the cpu i'll use is Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2630 v4.

Non-ECC is fine, just means you dont get this function which is not a must. It depends on your usage and preference.

But make sure you check the motherboard on whether it supports registered or not, that's imo a bigger factor when it comes to price and many systems only take one of the two.

ECC / NON-ECC works like this...

You can use non-ecc in pretty much everything but you can't use ecc unless the mobo supports it.

Good rule of thumb to keep in mind.

Also ecc memory fails less often and has a longer lifespan generally 2nd hand memory is easy to find and ebay is your friend with that. 2nd hand is cheaper and you will still get the same performance as if new. Data centers are typically clean so your going to get a good deal.
