M.2 Question regarding speeds

I have a Asus Z370 plus gaming mobo. It says on the website  that i can take speeds on my m.2 drive 2242/2260/2280. If I found a drive on amazon that ran at 3500...would it just dub down?  or would it not work. I have updated the bios a few times over the last few years.......What do you think

The 2242, 2260, and 2280 are lengths, not speeds.

Not really as those are common lengths, but some motherboards may support longer or shorter m.2 SSDs, but 2280 is the most common. Its broken down by width and length, 22mm wide, XXmm long. So a 2280 m.2 drive is 22mm wide and 80mm long. This is what these numbers represent.
