I got a note from my internet supplier that in 1 year I am recieving 5g. They offered me the same shit as I have now + a 5g router for an extra 5$ a month (binding for 24 months). Essentially pay 120 dollars, for a 5G router that is 300$ but in 24 months binding to my internet supplier. The router is ZTE MC801A. My current router is almost 4 years old, and I got tempted by this offer. Either that, or wait until 5G releases and buy a router then. My question is, is it worth it?

My concerns are? If prices go up with 5g release, it's probably worth it. But will 5G routers get that much better in 1 year? Also I don't want to spend like 300$ for a router one christmas lmao. What do you guys think?

Didn't I just respond to this?

You're in sweden and your mother doesn't want to buy a new modem/router?

Just restart your current router daily, get a timed power switch and be fine until you actually get 5G,  You have a year to wait anyway.

I'd be very surprised if they do not try to offer this to you again once 5G is live.  I'd never trust a company claiming "it will be available in a year", timelines for rolling out stuff like this is rarely reliable.

That said, if the current 4G router is old or not a high-end model, a modern 5G router might still perform better even on 4G so it could be worth it.  Although unless we know the models of both what you have now and what the new one is, we can't even guess if this would be the case.

The B535 supports LTE CAT7 and the MC801A supports LTE CAT22, although I have no idea what your local cell tower will support.

I wouldn't like to guess if this will make any real-world difference or not.
