Hi. This is my first time building a PC.

I've been trying to get my build finished for a few weeks now, but I keep getting the same problem.
I have everything put together and turn the computer on. All the fans are running and the motherboard light is lit. No beeping.
When I plug in hdmi to dvi into the computer, it says no signal. I plug in the mouse and it's not lighting up. So, I had the motherboard swapped. I redo everything without the gpu and turn it on, the mouse is lighting up when plugged in. So, I turn it off and put in the gpu, now the mouse doesn't light up. Still no signal from the monitor. Even without the gpu, the ports of the motherboard do not seem to be working since the mouse doesn't light up when plugged in. I think the gpu may have caused this issue, or maybe the cpu is behind it.
Looking this up, it may be the bios. Anyone seen this problem? Thank you.

PC specs (all new items):

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600 (with Noctua cooler)
  • Kingston 8GB DDR4 3200MT/s
  • ASUS Prime B550M-A AC
  • EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 12GB XC GAMING
  • be quiet! Straight Power 11 750W

Ryzen 5600 has no iGPU, so you need to have a graphics card installed to even pass through P.O.S.T.

Because the Ryzen 5600 has no iGPU, the DVI and VGA ports don't work.

The motherboard won't have an beep error codes....if there is no motherboard speaker hooked up.

Your motherboard does not have Debug LEDs, so you need to get a hold of a motherboard speaker -- if your computer case / chassis did not come with one.

Have you tried without the HDMI-to-DVI adapter?

It could be a faulty adapter.

First things first. Is your monitor cable plugged in to the motherboard's video port, or the GPU's video port?
No offense, but the motherboard's video port is dead without an iGPU (non-G Ryzen does not have one) and you'd be surprised how many people don't know the difference.

Secondly, verify the cable and monitor work with other setups if possible.

A good early check would be to verify the RAM's SKU is on the board's Qualified Vendor List. This can be a very big deal with Ryzens - they are quite fussy about RAM, I found this out the hard way myself. RAM instability can and will cause no-video boots / POST failures. And with no video, it's hard to verify which is occurring.

Did you update the BIOS? AM4 boards needed latest BIOS for Ryzen 5000 series.

No, I did not update the BIOS. Looking online, seems like there are multiple ways of updating it.. What's the optimal way of doing it without display? Thank you

Good to know that DVI and VGA do not work. All the cords I have are either DVI or VGA.. An HDMI-HDMI wire is ok, right? I can get that in the morning.

Can this issue be solved without a motherboard speaker? If the speaker is needed, I can get the board tested. Thanks

I tried both ports, no luck. Plugged into video port first, no signal. Same with motherboard port.

Laptop to monitor using the same cable, works. Desktop to monitor using that exact same cable, doesn't work.

I know the RAM is compatible with the motherboard.. Is there a site to see if RAM is ok with the CPU? I don't see anything on the AMD website.. Thank you

Most chip mfrs will state a max RAM speed for chips but this isn't necessarily a cap, some get away with a bit more than that.

How exactly did you verify the RAM was compatible? Because if it was anything but the board manufacturer's Qualified Vendor List, it really can't be trusted. Crucial and Pangoly both said the Ballistix kit I used in three builds, was compatible with each of the three boards it caused problems with. For the two that have been addressed, swapping the RAM stopped the issues. The third is in furlough and not a priority to fix at this time.

I don't see anything about RAM on the manual of the chip. Most sources say 3200mhz is the max, can they be trusted? The manual does say to contact the motherboard manufacturer on updating the BIOS, maybe that is the issue?

I verified through the manufacturer's website: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/PRIME/PRIME-B550M-A-AC/HelpDesk_QVL_Memory/ . It does say Kingston RAM 3200 specs for the motherboard. I will try swapping the RAM to see if it helps. Thanks

I wouldn't think the RAM is the problem then. Before swapping, I'd make sure your timings, voltage and speed are set correctly. These, too, can be an issue if not set correctly, and DOCP doesn't always auto-detect the correct settings. The specs for the RAM you have with the board you have are 22-22-22-52 at 1.2 V. Mine called for 16-18-18-36 at 1.35V and DOCP would not detect it at those settings, so I had to set them manually. So you might want to double-check the DOCP profile for that.

In this situation, how do you set the voltage and speed?

People are telling me that BIOS needs to be updated for monitor to work. Do I need to bring it to a local shop or buy a chip? Can USB work without the flash button? What optimal alternatives are there in your opinion? Thank you.

RAM timings, voltage and frequency can be set manually by going into BIOS, disabling XMP / DOCP and accessing manual settings. As each board manufacturer decides how and where this is listed in the BIOS menus, it is best to read your board's manual or look through your particular BIOS menu to find where they are.

Update: I got the monitor and PC working! I did put in the RAM sticks into A2 & B2, and connected the HDMI-HDMI cord. Everything works after that. I believe it had something to do with the RAM slots. HDMI definitely assisted with the help. Special thank you to @An0maly_76 and @-rascal-.
