Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: NAS, Jellyfin, Sonarr, Lindarr, and Radarr.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 

I currently have an external 16TB HDD attached to my PC and I have outgrown this solution so I am looking to build a server to move everything off my PC. Priority will be storage and upgradibility.

 

I have no issues building the server as I have built my PCs for years. I really just don't know where to start when it comes to server hardware. I know I could use commodity pc components but I want to try working with server hardware. I will be using a linux os for the server, but I am still deciding which one.

you could build a server from scatch..or you can go on ebay and get some really powerful and purpose built servers from ebay. Like the Dell R720xd and stuff it full of HDD's...then raid them together...install linux...and done... u also get some powerful cpus (if ur not gaming that is) and a ton of ram

I like the idea for sure. Are RAID cards a requirement? Or what is the benefit of using a RAID card.

well, these servers have their own built in hardware raid card. These servers actually use SAS controllers and SAS drives, but they are backwards compatible with sata.

the Benefit of hardware raid is that it puts no load on the CPU or memory because the hardware raid card has its own specialized CPU to handle everything (usually an IBM PowerPC CPU). And its connected internally via a pci-e x16 slot. The downside is if you want to use software raid (which u shouldnt because that means exta load for your cpu and ram and is pretty inefficient since then the server drinks power like no tomorrow) u cant since the hardware raid card does not provide raw access to the OS.
