Should I be cautious plugging in a used harddrive?

ArcticApe

Hello!

I recently bought a used harddrive, but I'm having some paranoia. Is it possible I plug it in and it compromises my system somehow? I have an option to plug it into an old HP machine and do a disk wipe with the BIOS there but its a bit of a hassle

If you don't know the person you got it from and have concerns the extra steps by using the old HP sounds like it'd be worth the effort

Who knows what's on the drive

Desktop: Intel i7-13700K / Asus ROG Strix  z690-e / Nvidia 4080 FE / 32GB DDR5 Corsair Dominator / 2TB  WD SN850x  / 48" Lg C2 & 27" Asus ProArt

Plex Server: Dell OptiPlex 7010 /  i7-13700 /  32GB DDR5 / 1TB Samsung  990 Pro / Ubuntu

Laptop: M2 Macbook Air / 8G ram / 8core CPU / 10core GPU / 512GB SSD

NAS: Synology 1821+ , 2x Synology RS819 = 200TB

Doing so runs the risk of viris/Malware infection. I have never taken precautions, but I tend to get disks from known sources.
