Swapping HDD in dead external drive

The HDD in my Canvio 2TB seems to have died, can I swap the disk out for another one? (Basically, are these Toshiba models using a regular 2.5 drive with a USB adapter, or is it a 2.5 drive with a custom controller board, thus I could not just swap it)? I like the size of this little drive, and I already have tons of spare HDDs, so I don't want to buy a new one.

(There are a lot of different versions, but on this link: Amazon.com: Toshiba Canvio Advance 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0, Black - HDTC920XK3AA : Electronics it is the one called "Backup", the 2tb version.)

Open the sucker up and see what it looks like inside. If it has the standard HDD connections for data and power, swap a new one in.

 

If the HDD is dead or the controller is dead, who can say.

it really depends on the drive you have.  If it's a standard sata drive?  EZPZ.  Swap and done.

 

If it's soldered?  You're boned, and are not swapping anything.
