Yes, a PCIe gen 4 slot will operate in gen 3 with a gen 3 SSD.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Yes,you can use a Gen 3 SSD on Gen 4 slot but keep in mind it will only run at Gen 3 speeds. Also if you are using it as your boot drive it's advisable to put in a slot which is nearest to your CPU. All the best.

Yes, you can use that. All the PCIe Gen 4 motherboards and Gen 4 CPUs are backward compatible with Gen 3 devices. So, it is true that you can install and use a Gen 3 NVMe SSD on a Gen 4 motherboard slot. The only thing to notice is that you will get the Gen 3 SSD speed even when you use it on a Gen 4 motherboard.
