Recommendations from windows or mac laptops that I should consider and also specs I should be looking out for. I am in my freshman year but I want something that can last me the 4 years of my uni. Budget is 1600 USD. I live in the middle east, in the U.A.E so any U.S or Canadian deals are not on the board but laptop recommendations are welcome

Check with the faculty on what programs they use in class first. Sometimes they will give you a few more options but if you use something different, it will be difficult to follow in class because the exact layout could be different.

For example when I learnt to code for Java, the faculty suggests IntelliJ and Eclipse but only IntelliJ is used in demonstations. Of course in this case both support Windows, Mac OS and Linux, but you might use software that is limited in platform support I don't know.

But if you're just using the laptop for work, imo better to go to stores and get a feel on the keyboards. Can't really judge a keyboard through reading.

M1 Air + upgrades (16/512 is USD 1260) will be the best overall value (both Apple and other manufacturers). If you want more - go with M2 Air + upgrades (16/512 is USD 1580). You won't necessarily benefit from both upgrades. MacBooks typically last very long - so way past your studies.

Apple has student + seasonal 'back to school' extras (the prices I mentioned).

However, if some of your courses will require Windows specifically - depending on the app, you can either run it with Virtualization (Parallels - Windows ARM) or you'll have to use lab pc.
