i7 2600 uprade path

Since Ivy Bridge is only a die shrink on the same socket, there's some motherboards that support both Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge. But as far as I know, Haswell is already not backwards compatible, being a newer micro-architecture with a newer socket. So my best bet is 3rd gen is as far as you can go.

 

Edit: But since it's a dell, highly proprietary, I'd say the odds are slim it'd work.

i7-2600 should be an LGA1155. Unfortunately, it's not as simple as just finding the top-tier LGA1155 and dropping it in. Big factors here are chipset, and possibly what Dell validated the board for. For example, LGA1155 goes as far as i7-3770K (to the best of my knowledge).

 

But in revamping a Lenovo M71E SFF workstation, the best I could do was an i7-2600, because its H61 Express motherboard has limited processor support (B75 is one LGA1155 chipset that supports more advanced processors), but also because the best option Lenovo validated my particular model for was the i7-2600, and as I didn't have space for a GPU and didn't want to risk wasting money on upgrades that might not work, that's what I went with. This can differ with manufacturers and models, however.

 

So first and foremost, verify which chipset you have and what Dell has validated the board for. Sometimes you can get away with better than the manufacturer validated it for, but don't bet on it.

 

Added: Certain vintage Dells were also known for a funky inverted layout that put the expansion slots on the other side of the case, making it impossible to upgrade motherboard without going to Dell for it.

BTX didn't make it out of the LGA775-era that I'm aware of. Heck, they'd gone back to mATX before Core 2's were superseded.

As stated, Ivy Bridge (3xxx-series) is the best you could do in theory, but you'll have to check what your BIOS has whitelisted for CPUs. And, FWIW, it's maybe a 15% gain; what are you using the computer for?

You basically have the Best CPU for that socket. Even if you did upgrade to the next compatible gen of Intel CPUs (3rd) you would see a tiny improvement going to an i7-3770.

Thank you. That is the same as I could find. When i have the money i will be back for more advise. I would like to have better gaming capabilities than i have now as well as multitasking so I can get back into Subtitling. Plz, no need for more replies.

You have a Q67 chipset, which only supports Sandy Bridge. Your i7 2600 is as far as it can go.

I only know about it because of a dead Optiplex 740 with a dead PSU and an Athlon 64 X2 5600+ that currently languishes in my parts pile awaiting payment from someone who wants to take a chance on whether it survived the PSU going kablooey. I'm guessing the LGA775 is probably about the same vintage.
