Howdy,

I was cleaning my PC just now and I stumbled upon the ECO mode switch on my EVGA PSU that I have left on OFF for like 5 years now. The fan has always been spinning regardless of the load on the PSU.

Now, it still works fine with zero issues but I thought to myself what happens if it dies or starts making weird noises, can I:

  1. file a warranty claim on it considering it's still under warranty?
  2. If the answer to the above is yes, do I have to send them the PSU for a fan replacement? or do they just send me a fan to install myself? (cause otherwise I wouldn't be able to use the pc), how does that work exactly?
  3. Where can you get sealed, original and brand new Globe Fan fans in europe? I'd rather not use ebay or similar websites where there's no guarantee that the fan will be brand new or original.
  4. Actually I'd rather use a high quality Noctua fan instead but how do you adapt the 3 or 4 pin connector to the 2 pin one? what about the voltage/amperage ratings? do they sell compatible and long-lasting PSU fans?

Techpowerup reviewed my PSU and they say the fan's model number is the RL4Z-B1402512M which allegedly uses double-ball bearings. How long do these types of fan typically last at low speeds? I found an estimate on ball bearing fans, not double BB.

Thanks.

it would be for the whole psu, opening up a psu is a bad idea if you aren't experienced. they will either send you a replacement after you send yours in, or they may send you one first if you give a deposit, and refund your money when they receive and review yours.

not sure, but i really wouldn't recommend going this route since it has a warranty.

I opened up a corsair PSU before. It should be relatively safe if you don't touch anything that isn't plastic but I do get where you're coming from. Getting shocked is not exactly a fun activity.
Also, since the PSU components were running cooler than expected (I assume they calculate the warranty period with ECO mode turned ON) I probably won't have any dying PSU components anytime soon and I have a year and some months left on the warranty. So if I void the warranty when the fan dies replacing things myself, it's not a very big deal all things considered.

I wouldn't even try. Noctua fans are neither suited for this kind of application, nor can they be hooked up to a PSU's fan control easily due to a bunch of reasons.
