Need Upgrade Priority Advice

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Performance wise I got it back up to acceptable levels by Overclocking the CPU at the cost of higher heat levels. Most of my games are now capable of running at 60fps, but I was planning on future proofing for upcoming games like Star Citizen and Watchdogs.

From what I read on other topics, upgrading the GPU is priority when it comes to gaming, but I'm worried that If I invest on a substantial upgrade from my GTX 670 (which is the 780ti), one the other components might fail due to their relatively old age and I won't have enough money to replace it.

Don't 'future-proof'. Upgrade when you need to and don't waste your money.

The cpu is probably the last component in a system that would die from old age/wearing down.

Hello, I need a little help deciding which parts of my PC to be upgraded. I was thinking of getting a GTX780ti but looking at how old my CPU is, I think its better to wait for the Z97 boards and the Haswell refresh. What do you guys think?

Here is my current set up and how long they have been in service:

CPU: Intel Core i7 920 Overclocked @ 3.8ghz (5 years)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H50 (5 Years)
Mobo: Foxconn Bloodrage LGA1366 (5 years)
RAM Model: 6gb Patriot Viper Extreme 1600mhz 8-8-8-24-1T (5 years)
GPU: Palit  GTX670 Jetstream (2 Years)
PSU: Corsair HX620W (4 Years)

Thanks! :)

Is your current performance unsatisfactory? What's it being used for?

Oh that's a relief, how about my RAM? Do I need to increase at least 12gb with 3x4gb set up?

Are you doing anything ram intensive? Are you running out of ram with your 6GB?

If you're looking for an upgrade to make your system more snappy, look into getting a ssd and probably not more ram.

Well now that you mention it, I don't really need to upgrade as of now. I mostly just game and I just tried out Shogun 2 again with my CPU OCed and it ran superbly at 60fps average and 55minimum. I also tried to render one of my 3D projects and it took a while but its something I can live with since its more of a hobby now than a job requirement.

All in all I'll get to save even more money for the time when I really do need to replace something. Thanks WoodenMaker, this was great advice and I'll keep this in mind next time I think I need an upgrade.
