Hello all, I am looking to build my first TrueNAS Core build and replace my current Synology DS1817 that has started acting up. I am looking to go big on capacity with room to add a second VDev in the future if my data hoarding gets really bad. Application wise I plan to run Plex, Nextcloud, qbitorrent, and AdGuard Home (I don't see a pihole app which I currently use). My question is whether I will benefit from any cache drives based on my use case or if I should use a metadata VDev. The build I am currently looking at is based on no cache drives or metatdata VDev.

You likely don’t need any SSD’s in a ZFS array for a home user. Plex certainly won’t need it, and if your only on gigabit LAN, the spinning rust array will easily saturate your networking.

Metadata on a mirrored pool of SSD’s Is something I have been looking into playing with, just because why not…. And because I will be going to 10GbE soon and having faster directory info and such would be nice - but I know I definitely don’t need it. I just have a few 120GB Samsung 840’s sitting on my desk, might as well use them for something.

I am thinking of adding a 10gbe NIC. Not sure it’s really necessary though as my internet is 600mbps and I’d only have 1 plex stream going at any given time.

You definitely don’t need it for Plex…. A blue ray is max 50 mbps, you would need to be streaming a wild amount of Plex for anything over gigabit to be required. 10GbE would be for a fast connection to your desktop for example, to transfer data back and forth quickly.

That’s what I was thinking, if I decide I want more speed I could always throw in an add in card. The mobo I picked is affordable and supports ecc which was a higher priority.

I would look for an actual Supermicro board. It would be worth the few hundred extra bucks at that point. Or, do what I and many have done, go with used server gear. I got a 28 thread xeon, 64GB of ECC DDR4 2133, and Supermicro board for ~450 bucks. eBay is your friend 🙂

Then just load it up with drives. But you can go with much less of a CPU, I just went with 28 threads because I have many VM’s virtualized all under proxmox, and plan to do some facial recognition stuff with local IP cams and that can take some CPU power.
