Hi.

I have my computer connected via Ethernet and my ISP maxes 45mbps in my area. Everything seems to work fine while browsing the internet, watching videos and playing games. Only whenever I download a file, whether using Chrome, or Steam or any other service my speeds max out at about 1mbps. I have tried looking online for a solution and cant seem to find something to manage bandwidth or a proper fix. Can anybody suggest something? Its taking hours to download a couple gigabytes.

Thank you

For steam i would check to make sure you're connected to a steam server thats closest to you. Other possibilities are that your ISP is throttling specific applications (like steam or netflix) . It may seem backwards but you could try get a VPN trial to see if downloading things through a VPN improves things cuz then you could narrow it down to either something on your local network thats blocking downloads or if its your ISP throttling your connection for a specific app.

Need some more information:

  1. Type of internet connection,
  2. Make/model of modem/gateway
  3. Does your ethernet go to anything in between your computer and the ISP device?
  4. Does your ISP throttle your bandwidth as per your contract with them? If so, under what conditions?

Hi. I did some more digging:

1. My ISP is Earthlink (they are associated with AT&T)

2. The modem they provide is a BGW210

3. The ethernet cable goes straight to my computer

4. My ISP should not be throttling my bandwidth.

I called them and they say their technical department is unavailable at the times I am available to communicate with them so I will have to wait until the weekend to sort that out. I have tried downloading things on other devices and the speeds are equally as slow. This leads me to believe the ISP is actually throttling my bandwidth. I will post again when I'm able to communicate with their technical department. I have checked several settings on Windows "Network and Internet" and everything seems to be correct on my end.

Have you tried downloading the same file on another device?

This way we can narrow whether its your internet service or that particular device.

Great Idea! I tried that downloading the same files on a laptop and was getting the same slow speeds. I now believe it has to do with the modem or the ISP itself.
