PSU upgrade - Too much overkill?

Go to solution Solved by x Relentless Xx,

Yes the 1000W is overkill, crossfiring 2 7870's consumes about 350W just by themselves. Id go with a Corsair RM750

Location: Germany

Hey guys,

I want to upgrade my power supply. I'm currently rocking a CX500 by Corsair. My system consumes 250W under load, and I'm planning to get another 7870 for crossfire. I was originally looking at a PSU around 650-700W like the Coolermaster V700.

My plans changed as my favourite reseller reveiled a sale on the NZXT Hale90 1000W semi modular power supply. They probably want to get rid of them since there is a version 2 of the PSU released.

The deal itself is excelent: From 189,99€ down to 119,99€. The NZXT is 80+ Gold certified and built by Superflower. This lead to a excelent 9.0 test score at Jonnyguru.

At the moment, my PC would use only 25 percent of the power. My concern is, that I would barely reach the 20% barrier at wich the 87% efficiency has to be achieved for 80+Gold.

My question is: Is that PSU too much overkill? I don't know how its efficeny will be at idle when around 5% gets used. Can you help me with the decision? The deal is only valid until Sunday evening (Now its Sunday 6.30 AM). What should I do?

Cheers, Sirtoby

You could probably run another 7870 on 500w's man, they use like 150ish watts of power, unless you are meaning 250w's less your gpu?

The CX 500 is pretty low end, and can't even deliver enough Amps for a GTX770, so adding another 7870 would be too hard for it

Yes, it's very, very overkill. There are cheaper alternatives. http://www.amazon.de/dp/B00A03LW54/?tag=pcp05-21

Yes, it can. There are plenty of people running 770's off of cx500's.

My CX500 is from the second revision, where they only got 34 Amps. The Third Revision has 38A and that should run a 770, but even if my rev could do it, it would operate at the limit.

Thanks for your help, guys. I will get myself a nice RM750 or an V700.

Those are really overkill. You could probably run them off of a rm550 with adapters if you really wanted to.

I know, but I want a PSU that will last for upcomming builds, and has headroom for whatever graphics card I will put in it. I got the CX500 because I was on a budget when I did my build.

Just saw, that I can get a good deal on the Silverstone strider Gold 650W. I will buy that one. Thanks again for the help

Isn't that NZXT Hale a pretty poorly built PSU? Or am I mistaken about another of their PSU line?

The NZXT Hale 90 is a Super Flower Golden Green unit and the Hale90v2 is a custom design from FSP. Both of them are good power supplies.

I believe you are thinking of the Hale82-N and Hale82 v2 which are indeed poor (the Hale82-M is good being a Seasonic M12II Bronze unit with DC-DC).
