Upgrading from gtx 1060 6gb to Rog strix 3080 10gb oc

Hello everyone,

I finally got my 3080! I’m new to pc building and it’s the first time I’m upgrading the gpu.

I’ve read some people use DDU and other just plug in the new gpu update the drivers and are good to go.

what my best option here? I’ve never used DDU before and I’m afraid to mess things up!

You already used NVidia drivers, you don't need to uninstall anything !

DDU is recommended if you run into some kind of issue, or if you're going from AMD to nvidia/vice versa.

Some GPUs will produce less frames without a clean install of the drivers.

Without one my 3090 ti ran like a 2080 ti.

I only use ddu when theres an issue. Which has been twice in a decade. 
Perform a clean install and call it a day.

So I just plug in the new one and download the new drivers or should I simply uninstall the driver through windows first?

You let the NVidia installer do it.

 

When you see this click on Custom(Advanced). 

 

Then click on Perform a clean installation.

On a separate note, I’m upgrading my psu from a Corsair rm650 2021 to a corsair rm850x, can I use the same cables or should I swap all of them with the one coming with the psu?

There are experts in the Power Supplies part of the forum so someone there may be able to answer the question.

 

I use the cables that come with the PSU. 

I have 3 Corsair PSUs and 2 have the same pinout and one is different. Also my EVGA PSUs have 2 different pinouts. 

I won't even install one unless the old one is in its box and put away.
