Budget (including currency): USD$ 1250-1750

Country: United States of America

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 3d modeling, video editing, general photo editing. The most intensive games I'll likely play are Final Fantasy, Civilizations, and PS/GC simulators.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cGzrRv

I am coming from a MacBook Air and going straight into building a PC. I would be fine with one or two 1080p monitors and upgrading to 4k a few years down the line. I would shoot for the 60 fps refresh rate.

I'd probably go a step or two up on the GPU, at least to a 6600 XT, maybe up to a 6700 XT or 3060 Ti if budget allows. The RAM you've picked is unreasonably expensive unless you're buying it solely for the name/RGB. Also, the case you picked doesn't have an external 5.25" bay for an optical drive. And in 2022, I'd suggest going with an external USB-powered optical drive if you need one. You're also going to need a cooler for your 5800X, because those do not come with one.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

About what id recommend

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CtDvd9

Afiak all of the programs you listed are cpu intensive so I put a stronger cpu for not that much more

Cheap aftermarket cooler that'll keep it cool

Good board with wifi

Cheapest kit of 32gb ram

Same 1tb storage, although you can get some for cheaper

Better gpu that'll last longer than a 3060 for 4k, but depending on how far in the future, you might buy a better gpu anways

Good case and a good 850 watt psu

Kept the writer since I dont know much on that side

I'm assuming it'll be external since there's no 5.25 inch bay

For a system like this, you're better off going Intel. the i7 12700F is $20 more than the 5800X but is more similar in performance to the 5900X while getting a bit better single thread performance as well.

None of the cases you selected have 5.25" bays, so either you need to switch the case to something like the Fractal Pop Air or just get an external Blu Ray drive.

For this budget, this is what you can get (a little more cost optimized). You're even able to squeeze in a 3080 to this budget, though you can drop it down to a 3060 if you want to save $400 (just get whatever the cheapest 3060 you can find is, brand doesn't really matter). AMD GPUs are also a decent option, but since most 3D modeling and video editing software is optimized for Nvidia cards I'd try to stick to Nvidia cards.

I'll suggest this too: if you're US-based, go to a garage sale. Literally any garage sale. See that busted-ass old Dell Inspiron from 2007? The one under two stacks of clothing? It has a DVD drive in it. Might even be an RW. Offer them $5. Trust me, they don't even know it's under there.

That only works for DVD drives though, no pre-builts I'm aware of come with Blu Ray drives (like what's in the parts list), and finding someone who bought a desktop Blu Ray drive is pretty uncommon.

You should be able to get well more than 60fps with this cpu & gpu combo. I went with 2TB of SSD storage for more room for the games, especially the AAA games.

Thank you for your advice, I wasn't sure about the coolers because the case I chose came with some! I have some on my excel file that I'm using to keep track of my tentative choices.

Thanks, I think based on the consensus around the post, I'll stick with getting a USB CD/Blu-Ray drive!
