Best way to test if latency is due to local network or not

Pinging your routers IP.

If the server is on Windows, find your Default Gateway/router IP by typing ipconfig in the command prompt of this machine.

Then type ping routersip -t and just let it run.

Note the "time" section. I'm wired directly to my router so its a consistent <1ms latency.

Hi there,

I run a MC server, and for some reason as players join, the longer they stay in the game, their ping increases too.

I would like to test if this is due to my local network, and a fault in my old used wifi router that is being used as a WAP and a switch (connected via Ethernet btw), or if it is due to my internet provider, as speedtest.net shows that I have 10ms ping, but that may not be the case under a sustained load of 1 player (yeah, even 1 player causes immense ping of around 1000+).

Thanks,
Eli

It can be their ISP too. Also certain ISP pairs have exceptionally bad connections.

You'd have to perform that test while the users are having the problem for it to tell you if the problem is local.

Plus, does it impact all users at the same time?  Are you sure the Minecraft server itself isn't just running out of memory or having some other issue?

I'd very much expect this to more likely be a MC issue.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

It's basically a dead server, not very people get on it at once and all. Unsure if it effected everyone at the same time.

The MC server has 12GB of mem, I have a 32GB system and happens even when there is nothing else on but the server sadly.

Is it local on your LAN?  You could possibly try connecting multiple local clients to see if it triggers the problem.

I don't know what version it is, but I think I recall having issues with larger worlds on Java until I tweaked the memory settings on the startup command for the server.  Of course this was ages ago before Bedrock edition launched.

Don't have that many accounts, don't worry though, should be all good.
