GPU causing PSU failures?

MP98n

Hello,

I recently completed my new build. I am using a 3080 FE with a Corsair water block on it, a 5800x, Gigabyte Aorus X570 i Pro Wifi motherboard, Corsair SF750 PSU and Corsair vengeance RAM. I had used all except the 5800x in my previous build, with the additional exception of the 3080 FE being stock and not water blocked. When I powered it on, I got nothing; no post, no bios buzzer error codes. I tried various combinations of old hardware to the point where I think it's probably easier to show what I did and what the result was as a chronological list.

  • SF750, 5800x, 3080 --> NB
  • SF750, 3600, 1080ti --> NB
  • TX750M, 3600, 1080ti --> Boot
  • TX750M, 5800x, 1080ti --> NB
  • TX750M, 3600, 1080ti --> Boot
  • TX750M, 3600, 3080 --> NB
  • TX750M, 3600, 1080ti --> NB

Then, since both PSUs appeared to be dead, I waited overnight before trying again in the morning.

  • TX750M, 3600, 1080ti --> Boot
  • TX750M, 5800x, 1080ti --> NB
  • TX750M, 3600, 1080ti --> Boot
  • TX750M, 3600, 3080 --> NB
  • TX750M, 3600, 1080ti --> NB
  • SF750, 3600, 1080ti --> Boot

I then stopped testing since I didn't want to risk any more components. I've updated the bios to the latest version for the MoBo (F36c). From what I can tell, the 3080 appears to be damaging the PSUs. I don't know why the 5800x isn't working either. I can only guess that it was either defective (which I know is unlikely) or somehow got damaged on the initial boot attempt. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts really

Have you tried updating BIOS?

[2] Corsair SF units with LOT codes from 194448* through 201148* have potential problems, Corsair conducts a voluntary replacement, source.

Found that line in the PSU tier list.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

My SF750 is from lot 211448*. I'm also getting the same repeatable problems with the TX model as well. I really don't think it's the PSUs that are the issue, and more that they're being 'tripped' in some way. They stop working for a while and then come back, almost like a self-healing fuse is blown or something. I'm not even sure if computer PSUs use those though

So it seems to have sorted itself. I left the whole system powered off overnight, and tested 3600/1080ti with the TX PSU and it booted. Tested 3600/3080 with the same PSU and it’s booted. I have a replacement 5800x arriving tomorrow so I’m not going to push my luck and test the CPU again.

The only real change I made was removing the water block from the 3080 and reapplying the stock cooler
