Getting into networking

HeathCliff

Hi again guys

So recently, as part of some stuff that's come up, I need to learn as much about networking as possible. The majority of it being in the software area, but also some in the hardware sector. What site would you recommend? From what I heard, EliTheComputerGuy is pretty much where it's at, but seeing as though the videos are over 3 years old, is it still worth looking at?

I have roughly 2-3 months to get as much crammed in as possible.

It's networking, age doesn't really matter if it's in the past like 5 years..for a basic standpoint and a good start. Recent vids may help once you get the basics. I used Professor Messor's video series to get the basics and then took a class for Networking. If you can, you can take some classes, online or in an actual school.

I'm afraid I can't study at school. I'm already knee deep in A-Level Maths, Physics and Engineering. Picking up another subject will be a nightmare. I need it to be online so I can study at my own pace in my own time.

Eli has pretty much given up on tutorials he now concentrates on his "daily blobs", his slant (nowadays) seems to be more on running a tech BUSINESS rather than a TECH business

I did my HNC(a UK qualification) in networking at a college so can't recommend a site, maybe try googling "basics networking ".

Eli seems to like "for Dummies" books and what he calls bunny books (take it they have a rabbit as a logo).

Trying to get a network summer job? Same here matey, THough anyway to answer your question, I would watch those videos that are 3 years old because, it'll help you even though of the age. If you really want to get heavy duty (what I'm up to right now) is buy microsoft networking books, they show you a great amount of detail.

The time you enjoy wasting, is not wasted time.

A good startingpoint would be the OSI reference model. But networking is a REALLY BIG topic...

You can check professor messer on youtube he's got extensive lectures on network +

^^ What he says, try to find some books/videos dedicated to the Comptia network+ certification.

Then after, if you want to get deeper, take a look a some CCNA books.

You can't really cram 'networking', you need to build your foundation from the ground up.

Start with the OSI model and get an understanding of how/why packets traverse through networks the way they do. Learn about Broadcast Domains and Collision Domains and how/why they are different.

If you're looking for videos EliTheComputerGuy is great for getting a nice highlevel understanding of subjects. I really like his stuff for that. Once you're ready to delve deeper down into things you'll want to check out CBT Nuggets and other self study methods like using Cisco Packet Tracer or even better buying some older used gear to lab on.
