But I know that Fraps does offer an option to record frametimes when benchmarking.

Couldn't they simply display what numbers it was recording on screen? Or is that just inaccurate?

to my knowledge fraps does not offer an option like that and if they could do that i dont think they would of gone out and spent like $10k on the equipment they needed to do frame timing if they could just use fraps.

You know that frametime isn't really number you can follow? This is from Fraps wikipedia article:

 

The frametimes benchmark feature (logging of individual frame render times) ...

 

So the number would change so fast that your eyes couldn't register it.
