Hey there,

there are already lots of topics about having a low GPU usage while gaming. But there wasn't really a solution to any of them I read so far. Therefore I'm trying to give as much information as possible to get to the source of the problem.

I upgraded from a Gigabyte GTX 1060 to an ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3070 Ti.

So far so good. But my GPU usage is always around 50 to 60%.

Here are my Components:

  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING II
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 3800x
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB RS 16 GB (2 x 8 GB)
  • Drive: Crucial P5 Plus CT500P5PSSD8 500GB Solid State
  • GPU: ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3070 Ti
  • PSU: Seasonic FOCUS GX-650 (650 Watts)

I connected the graphics card to my PSU using two seperate Power PCIe cables (as Seasonic recommends it). I did a complete fresh install of Windows 10 Pro and installed the newest GPU Drivers from GeForce Experience (516.40). But I can't reach near 100% GPU usage.

It doesnt look like it's running too hot or having a CPU bottleneck. The Powersupply should also work fine with this card. But it only draws around 325 Watts from the wall outlet.

When I compare It to Videos by other people on YouTube their GPU reaches near 100% all of the time. For instance, here:

And well, here is mine running at the epic settings preset:

Both games were running at 1440p.

I've got no idea what to do or why my card can't reach 100% usage. It just would be nice to get 1/3 more out of my GPU I paid for... which wasn't cheap lol. 🙂

Thanks for helping out!

Spoiler

Disclaimer: This was my first PC build I've ever done. Be gentle with me. 🙂
I used Fortnite as an example because you can find more GPU tests about that game online.
Sorry if there are some grammer or spelling mistakes lol. English isn't my main language.

You're CPU bottlenecked. It might not look like it, but there's probably one core being used 100%. If you want to fix it you'll have to upgrade the CPU or increase graphics settings.

Edit: seems like no core is reaching 100%. But games like Fortnite have some optimization issues, so it doesn't fully use the hardware.

When I'm playing for instance GTA V the gpu utalisation is actually way better better but still noch reating near 100% usage.

And here it does:

Therefore I need a better CPU with a better singlecore Performance in order to get the full potential out of my GPU? I expected 8 cores with 3,9 (Boosted to average 4,3) GHz would be more than enough lol.

You should be able to do 4.5-4.7 at 1.35-1.45v

Playing easy to run games that don't require the headroom the 3070 has.

The 3070 non Ti can run RE2 at 5K maxed with RT at 60 FPS (Shadows on high due to Vram), good luck filling it's GPU core out with those potato games.

Cash Dump: 5800X. 32GB Ram. x570 motherboard. RTX 3070. 1440P screen.
