That is basically the same as 3200 bin anyways so id go for that and aim for 4600-4800 cl18/17 at 1.6-1.7v

Yep unless you happen to find cheap ballistix since those will just lazy oc to 4000 cl16 1.5v

Hello there after upgrading my CPU and graka i want to upgrade my RAM aswell currently i have 16GB 2400mhz and cant really decide for which one i should get.

My current setup is an I7-12700k
RTX 3080
ddr4 Z-690 from gigabyte

I mostly wondering about 32 or 64 gb and if the much higher prices for faster rams are really worth it.

well i wont need it but the current ram sticks are in use for 7-8 years and it would be nice if its the same for the next one.

I think in 7-8 years the CPU would become obsolete. So 32GB is IMO the "sweet spot".

DDR5 is arriving in these years.

you can get ~3600 CL16 at a very reasonable price now.  After that, it gets a lot more expensive as the speed goes up.

currently i am considering 32GB G.Skill RipJaws V schwarz DDR4-4400 for 150€ which is even cheaper than some slower sticks

star citizen's minimum is 32gb, but that isnt really a game as it is a cult's religious text that generates ferraris for chris roberts out of NFTs

Well the prices of RAM are probably not going up, rather than down...

So, 12th/13th gen is the end of the road for DDR4.  DDR5 is taking over as of this year.

You won't get upgrades out of this RAM in the future.

DDR4400 would be faster, but likely has worse timings, so you're trading up and down when you go up in speed.

yeah but i when i upgraded my CPU i bought an ddr4 board since i didnt want to buy overly expensive ddr5 ram and i dont plan on changing my mainboard anytime soon just to use ddr5.

That's fine, but expecting 7-8 years out of a board/chip is kinda a lot, so just be aware.

i know its amazing how long my last PC lasted technology is advancing pretty quick from time to time that even 1 or 2 year old stuff can be outdated really quick.

That ram has pretty decent timings, especially for the price, so it seems like a good buy:

But keep in mind that NO new platform supports DDR4, so this is not future proofing, you will need to buy new ram if you want to upgrade in a few years. So unless you are staying on the same platform for the next 7-8 years, you won't get to use that ram that long.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Well i just upgraded my CPU and mainboard dezember last year so yeah i will stick with it for quite some time the ram sticks is the last part left from my old PC which i havent upgraded that time because of my budget last month i got my 3080 so its now time to upgrade my ram and since i bought an ddr4 only board its what i will stick with for the next few years atleast.

Not reasonable when ballistix is cheaper and demolishes those with a meager 4000 cl16 lazy oc, also 4000 cl18 ripjaws v, 3200 cl14 bin rams, and viper steel 4400 cl19 go brrrrrrrrr

Actually you may even be able to get some somewhat cheap 4000 cl18 bin rams, mostly seen those cheap ripjaws 4000 cl18 rams and timings wise it looks like micron so basically binned ballistix for cheap, though only worth it when its around the same price as ballistix

4400 cl19 is most likely binned djr which is inferior to micron rev b 16gbit (32gb kit), dont expect much more than 4500 out of those, micron rev e and b can do 5000+ with a binned kit which the 4000 cl18 ripjaws v is, but id expect those to top out ~4800. You will need to run around 1.6-1.7v for these speeds so youll need good cooling, ics wont degrade as there have been ppl dailying these microns at 1.65v though over 1.7v and imc degradation is a concern so beware of that, though cooling is also a big limiter, vtt ddr needs to be low or youll be limited to ~1.6v, i think its ~800mv vtt ddr that these ics need to run 1.7v, 1.7v is not a neccesity till you are above 5000mhz, 1.6v just means slightly looser timings and less cooling issues

If you are getting high bin rams you should be overclocking anyways as these usually dont work out of the box and good ics tend to have tons of extra headroom freq wise. if you are not overclocking then just stick to normal 3200 cl16/3600 cl18, any other bin and oced ballistix will obliterate em

Then buy the 150€ CL19 DDR4 4400mhz ram, seems really good performance for the money and Gskill Ripjaws is a good brand.

first thanks for the long post i had to read up about some stuff i didnt knew about and honestly i am not sure if i understood everything. Good thing i asked since i never knew how little knowlegde i had about ram sticks.

anyway without oc you recommed 3200 cl 16 right?

for these there arent many ballistix on my sites for decent prices which is why i got to choose from the mentioned g.skill 4400 cl19 150€

g.skill 3600 cl18 110€
crucial ballisitx 3200 cl16 140€

and a crucial ballistix cl16 3000 for 75€

which one would you suggest?

Yep unless you happen to find cheap ballistix since those will just lazy oc to 4000 cl16 1.5v
