Can you use XLR to 3.5mm for a mic?

hypnoex

Hello!

I recently got myself a Radium XLR 300.

I was an idiot because I didn't realise what XLR is, i'm kind of a noob when it comes to computers.

Anyways, when I connected the microphone, I went into mmsys.cpl through run and realised that my computer doesn't recognize the microphone, as "High Definition Audio Device" (aka the rear audio jack in which the microphone is plugged in) shows up as "Not plugged in", when clearly I've plugged the microphone into the rear audio jack.

The microphone itself uses a XLR to TRS 3.5mm cable and comes with a split TRS to TRRS 3.5mm adapter.

I've tried the front panel audio jack, I've tried all rear audio jacks, I've tried using the cable without the adapter, I've tried using the adapter itself, I've tried reinstalling drivers, updating drivers, etc, etc.

One thing I've noticed is, if I use the adapter on my phone, the mic works on the phone, but for whatever reason I can't get it to work on my pc.

I don't know if I'm using the wrong cable or my audio ports have gone adios, I can't get it to work.

I've thought about getting an XLR to USB adapter but I don't know what to do.

It 'might' work at a reduced input volume.  But XLR to 3.5mm is hot garbage most of the time.  Your best bet is to grab a second hand Scarlett solo or a Presonus audiobox 96.  They're typically only 50ish dollars and are great for game chat/discord or even recording your own podcasts

Some cardioid mics NEED 48v phantom power too.  So check your manufacturer details and if it does make sure your external sound card has that.  I know for sure the Audiobox does.  I use one myself on my AT2020

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

Since it comes with that XLR to 3.5mm cable, it should be designed to plug into a standard consumer input. If your computer says there is no input detected then you either have a case of user error or a faulty input port. Grab a cheap USB soundcard to test.

This microphone is identical to the Neweer or otherwise BM800 microphone, these are electret medium diaphragm condenser mics that while technically not requiring phantom power certainly benefits from it, having said that, they sound absolutely terrible with the provided cable and I would hesitate to say they approach acceptability even using a proper audio interface.

I used to have a Neweer microphone it did require phantom power. Now I am using a dynamic micphone.
