Budget (including currency): CAD$ 700-800

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I've got an existing GTX 1660. Got all needed perfirels such as mouse, keyboard and monitor. I just need a compact pc built around the gpu that can run AAA games at medium -high 1080p range. Preferably a Ryzen based machine.

The goto chip for that with AMD is some 5600 variant.  Whatever happens to be cheapest.  I don’t know if you want one with a stock cooler or not.  Depends on how much more expensive it is.  The stock cooler isn’t great but it will do the job. If not, then $30-$50 for a cpu cooler.  I would say get a tower cooler, but you don’t need 4 pipes.  3 is fine.  A “3000 ready” itx b450 board with enough VRM to drive the 5600, and whatever case you like. Not sure how much PSU you need.  500-600 probably, though it could be lower.  Iirc the 1660 has 1 power plug, so a PSU with at least one pcie power cable would be needed.  2x8GB of ram.  Should fit in budget if you don’t go nuts with the case or the motherboard. The first thing you will want to do is update the firmware.  “3000 ready” generally run well enough to do that, but often not better.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

  1. When you say "compact", what do you mean? You need to be specific as there are big cost differentials between compact ATX, mATX, and mini-ITX builds.
  2. The GPU model, or at least it's length and height is important, especially when dealing with mini-ITX.
  3. Why the preference for Ryzen?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

1660s are generally pretty short so I didn’t consider it a concern.  You make a valid point though.  If that’s the card that is had there must be space for it.  Bright side is the case can be matched to the video card.  If it’s a big video card there may likely be lots of space for a cooler.  Sometimes there isn’t with SFF stuff though.  If you gotta go AIO to make stuff fit (which could happen) a 120mm AIO should be enough for a 5600 so a $60 cooler maybe.  A 5600x3d might push that a bit so perhaps a bit more cooler mid-high end 120 or low end 240 call it $80 for the cooler.
