My current laptop, a HP Pavilion 15, from 2016 is getting old and is running slow. I'm a student and I'm looking for a laptop that will be able to smoothly run Adobe programs and specifically Adobe After Effects. I've been looking at some HP Envy laptops and they seem like they suit me. I don't really have a set budget I'm not comfortable going beyond say $650 USD. (Also, If at all possible, I would like my laptop to have an HDMI port built in but it's not a must, just a personal preference.)

So is it possible to get a laptop that will run after effects smoothly for $650?  I’m not sure.  That price of laptop likely won’t have a dGPU for one,, and if it does it won’t be good for much.  My memory is it likes thread count more than single thread.  The single thread eater in the CS is photoshop.  IGPs (excepting apple) seem to currently max around the 1030gddr5 mark, though they go down a good ways.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

That's far too low of a price for what you want with AE.

Honestly, the closest to that budget for "smooth" AE might be to get a Macbook Air with the M1 chip.

And even that one has a 1030gddr5 equivalent iGP.  To go higher with apple one needs to look at pros and ultimates.  The laptop desktop tax is back.  It never really went away, it just got obfuscated by the latest mining bubble.

Currently HP has the pavilion gaming with 1650 mobile for ~$625, but only 8gb of RAM (2x4gb) so if you can find some second hand DDR4 sodimms, and maybe sell those for like $20, you might be able to do that.

How much does a 1650 mobile beat a desktop 1030gddr5 by though?  Intel’s laptops might be able to pull one out of the hat. It’s the only thing I see on the horizon with any hope in it at that budget.

Nearly 3x passmark score. 2545 vs. 6969 (double nice)

So, recently I also chose a powerful and at the same time budget gaming laptop, and even for school (about $ 600). I decided for a long time which laptop I buy and after some time, friends at work advised to read an article on the site Povverful which well and clearly talks about the novelties on the market devices in 2022, in particular laptops. And after that I bought myself an Asus TUF Gaming 15
for $600,
I have been using it for more than half a year and I am satisfied with the purchase. But after some time, I noticed that the processor was very heated (the temperature was up to 80 degrees), but fortunately the problem was only in thermal paste, which I then replaced, and after that there were no problems with this model of laptop

Oof... So I guess I shouldn't be expecting a laptop capable of running most of the Adobe my school gives me access too. Sucks but it's not the end of the world, in reality at this point I just want pretty much ANYTHING better than my current laptop, perhaps I was being a tad too ambitious in my original request.

Oh wow, don't think I'd like to splash my cash in Apple's way but that M1 chip sure does look appealing. However, if we were to stick strictly to my budget +/- say like $50, what would be the most solid choice of laptop for me?

It will run it.  It might not do it in real time though.  It will likely be a whole lot better than what you have.  I don’t know if you could get into a fast thread 6/12 or not, might have to make due with 4/8, but it would still likely be quicker.

someone mentioned a device with an m1650 which is what I am basing this on.

Ah pardon me, must have misunderstood. Something is better than nothing and that does look like it's at least decent. Thank you though!

Sounds promising! Thanks for the suggestion!

It depends on how you define “struggle with”.  It’s also sort of dependent on the starting hardware.  It takes a lot of computer to make something that doesn’t struggle with that program.

If “struggle with” means “run it at all” which would be the case if you have the i3 950m no SSD version, yeah.  You can beat the heck out of that. The thing only has 4gb of ram.  It would probably struggle with merely windows. Microsoft sets the minimum ram size for win10 at 2 gb but it’s not really true.  A machine like that is competitive with a chrome book competitor laptop. Maybe a $150-$200 machine.  If the idea is to sell your old one for $650 (there were machines like that back then that would be worth that much today) and buy a $650 modern machine and expect the performance to be worlds better, unless you’ve got a buyer that is wildly over paying it ain’t gonna happen.

Yeahhh I don't know what to say with ya. I have a laptop i'm currently using and I wanna get rid of it, but tbh, there's not many laptop that's 650 ish or lower. It's best to really look a bit on Amazon perhaps. But I wouldn't know much tbh with ya. But beyond 650 is steep in all ways, I don't blame you on that. I spent 1063$ for this laptop. I'd love to sell it to you, but with what this laptop's been giving me, I don't wanna risk others using it and having it vomit on em over and over.

One thing to keep in mind.  there is a saying:

“you can have something fast, cheap, or good.  Pick two”.  You are choosing fast and cheap.  This means what you wind up with is likely to be cantankerous and fragile. It may not hold up to such stufff as being thrown into a backpack and toted between classes.
