I recently bought a pre-built desktop [Ryzen 5900X, RX 6800 XT, T-Force 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200, WD 1TB NVMe SSD, ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4, Apevia 1000W 80+ Gold] for USD $1750 because it felt like a very good deal. But since AMD and Intel are about to release the next gen CPU and GPUs and limited upgrade options later down the line since they need new motherboard and DDR5 RAM, should I return the PC and wait or should I just keep it?

is it not functioning to your expectations? thats the real question

You could return it if you want. Honestly this seems like more of a personal preference than an actual question

if your looking for a better upgrade path I would make the argument for waiting for next gen ryzen.

there's always gonna be a new platform around the corner, if you keep waiting to upgrade because someone anounced something, you're never buying a PC.

It's plenty good now. I am trying to future proof since I want this to last me the next 6 - 8 years with maybe a few minor upgrades

This will do 6-8 years (or basically the ps5/xbox series console generation) WITH keeping in mind a major gpu upgrade.

You'll be spending a lot of money if you intend on upgrading every time a new component comes out.

I've only been a pc gamer for about 2 years, having been a purely consols player for decades, and in those two years alone there have been multiple variations of Nvidia cards, with the new 40 series now on the horizon as well.

How long do you think it'll be till we see a 5080 or a 5090?

My advice is don't worry about it at the moment.

However, if you do have money to spend (as I'm guessing you'd have to add to the money you've already spent to get a worthwhile upgrade?) I'd say you could instead think about an upgrade of your key peripherals and acquire some new gaming content.

Mainly a top tier screen, but also a new mouse and keyboard of much higher quality, or a controller, and even some extra storage, or a subscription to gamepass or some new releases.

I know from personal experience how quickly SSD and HDD can fill up...especially if you want to keep your SSD free for your most important stuff and still be able to take advantage of something like gamepass or have multiple family members using separate accounts to game, do school work, use social media etc...

Assuming, you don't already have a really high quality 1440p 144/240hz monitor, my advice would be to get one.

(1440 is my sweet spot, as high refresh rate 4k is expensive and too demanding for most systems anyway)

The difference in visual clarity and quality a top tier panel makes over an entry level one is surprising and you will feel like you've upgraded your components anyway...at least for a while.

These are just personal thoughts based on my experience, by the way.

Whatever happens, enjoy your computer and good luck.

P.S If you already have a good monitor and set of peripherals then, obviously, this isn't applicable.
