I Have a build that needs nearly 400w according to pcpartpicker

Do I just need a 400w psu? Or should I go higher than that, 500~600w maybe even 800.

i agree with @Alireza, knowing the specs would be helpful. if the system pulls 400w, i usually like to give a 100w minimum of headroom. if you plan on upgrades down the road, you may want to account for that as well. but without knowing more, i'd say 500w minimum(quality psu) if it pulls 400w, maybe more depending on specs.

Always choose a PSU with at least an extra 20% capacity, and 80+Gold / Platinum is generally better than 80+Bronze. But quality matters and goes a long way. Look for those with 105 degree capacitors.
