UPS and Power strip

Go to solution Solved by Windows7ge,

Though it may not be recommended it should be fine. You might prefer to buy a short extension cord instead or better consider moving the UPS to a position where it can reach the wall outlet.

What model UPS did you buy? How long is the cord? The APC desktop ones usually come with ones of fairly decent length.

Hey!

I recently bought APC UPS with a pure-sine wave, problem is the cord going from the UPS to the AC wall outlet is kinda short. So my question is can I plug the UPS into a normal power strip (without surge protection) given that the only used outlet on the strip will be that of the UPS?

I've read multiple times online and on the product's brochure that one shouldn't plug a UPS into a power strip, but I need that extra cord length of the strip.

Cord is around 75 cm or 2.4 ft

they're covering their own asses with the "no power strips" thing, because they cannot rely on the power strip not being a piece of junk, or not having horrid power surge circuitry in the power strip.

essentially, a well built power strip is exactly the same as the cabling in your wall, just not in your wall.

they come with a decent length, but they just sometimes also dont quite reach. i've got one of my APC UPS'es plugged in a power strip too, not APC's fault that my outlet is 4 meters away.

Wow really? I mean that's great as far as cable clutter goes if a wall outlet was nearby. I have four UPS's attached to a power strip and nothings gone wrong so I would like to say you should be fine. My only guess as to why they would recommend against it might have something to do with the surge protection circuit found in a lot of them. Though I can't figure what impact that would have on the UPS. Cause misreading I guess?

Your closest outlet is ~13ft away? Well, you know what that means. Time to install more wall outlets! 😆

Yeah right? All UPS manufacturers state that nonsense and I can't see why a normal power strip wouldn't work. Though, I can also swap my UPS C13 power cord with a longer one that has the same voltage/ ampere. What do you think?

UPS cable is almost exactly near a wall outlet and it would fit but the issue is with the placement of my setup and UPS. I've crammed everything beside my bed and I don't have any space left so I don't wanna sleep beside the UPS, that's why I wanna connect it with a power strip or extension cord in order to change my UPS placement away from where I sleep. I could also try to get a longer C13 AC cable instead, would that work?

if it's got a detachable cord, and you can find a longer cord that's properly rated for the power that's probably the better way to go. note that the longer power cables are a breeding ground for scammy companies making shoddy cables.

Luckily it has a detachable cable, I'll try to look for a sturdy one. Thanks for the help much appreciated 🙂
