i'm currently running 1080ti sli in a 802 case.

the idle temp for each card is 40 degrees C and 49 degree C.

they do seem a bit hot, so i took off the side panel hoping to improve the airflow or heat dissipation.

but even with the side panel off, the temp do not change even one bit.

does this mean i have achieved the possibly best venting the case could offer, that's why the temperatures are the same with and without the side panel?

are 40 degrees C and 49 degrees C "acceptable" temperatures at idle?

please advise. thanks.

Are they dusty? Is the room rather warm?

Yeah unless the fans are loud.

room is clean, inside the case is dustless, though maybe i should take out the cards and blow clean them....

the case fans are not spinning any faster.

the gpu fans are controlled with afterburner spinning at around 60%.

i was just really surprised at that when i took off the side panel and waited for half an hour, the temperatures consistently and persistently stayed the same as when the side panel was installed.

i really thought taking off the side panel would help, at least like, 1 or 2 degrees, but no, not even.....

thanks.

You should probably replace the thermal paste. It is probably 5 years old at this point..

dang, i was afraid of that..... i never feel comfortable taking apart the graphics cards..... but you are right, maybe they need fresh paste........... ah dang...... sighs.....

it's not going to hurt them to idle at those temps, what do they run under load? just curious, why sli?

15 minutes in fallout 4 on average:

gpu-1: 65 degrees @ 32%

gpu-2: 52 degrees @ 33%

i never paid much attention to the temperatures because i used to have a small case. but i thought changing to a bigger case with more fans would lower the temperatures. 802 i have 3 intakes in the front, 3 exhausts on the top, 1 intake on the bottom, and 1 in the back. what confuses me the most is that, taking off the side panel doesn't help even lower half a degree, that's just weird.

i got these two cards back in 2017, and they actually still work great, so i just keep using them both.

those definitely aren't bad temps, I'm assuming gpu 1 is the top one, so the temps will always be worse on it even if re-pasted. any more demanding games, or a benchmark/stress test to see maxed temps? either way, you can re-paste and even change out the thermal pads if you want, but those temps aren't going to hurt the cards.

unigine heaven, extreme preset, on average:

cpu: 75 degrees @ 7%

gpu-1: 84 degrees @ 75% - 88%

gpu-2: 65 degrees @ 85% - 99%

-

i just don't understand why taking off the side panel didn't even help lower the temperature at all, not even one degree difference. the temperatures are surprisingly consistent with and without the side panel.

that gap between the two gets a lot bigger at those loads. as far as the temps being unaffected by the side panel being off, i would take that as a win, your case's airflow must be pretty much perfectly optimized.

then..... new thermal paste?? i really don't feel comfortable tinkering with the cards. i don't think it's complicated, i just feel uncomfortable. maybe it's time for me to put on big boy pants.

afaik the 1080 ti's throttle temp is 84(someone correct if i'm wrong), which would explain the lower numbers compared to the 2nd card. i would re-paste at least the top card, possibly new pads as well. things to consider would be if it doesn't reach those temps in the games you play, you are okay, you could also consider using just one of the cards instead. games don't use sli anymore, and you will most likely see the same performance, or possibly better at times, and temps will for sure improve without having to take anything apart on the cards.

random google says 82 degrees. i found that my idle temp are higher than most people, but they are actually ok when under load.

i use both cards not for gaming. i'm not into fps. i'm just hoping, and psychologically thinking, that two cards still grant mediocre performance gain when doing work and non-gaming-related stuff.
