Asus b 450 f

5800x

16 g corsair vengence ram

Pc wont post.  Mobo has yellow light, there were storms and i was out of the house so i dont know what happened to power while i was gone

Edit: to clarify the post led is yellow

What would you replace first? I removed the ram and tested both sticks individually but it still wont post.

But the mobo also wouldnt even spin the fans when i pushed the power button until i trooped the clear tc jumper.

Full disclosure i didn't rtfm before i tripped that jumper and did it connected to main power.

Now it wont even start boot cycle this morning. When i get off work i am going to break out the spare psu

Did it work before?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Yes worked the day before

Then an electrical surge or a catastrophic PSU failure is real likely.  Was it on a surge suppressor power strip?

Yup...is it possible for everything bit the main power rail to fail? I have a spare psu trying to get ahold of a stick of ram to troubleshoot that.

The problem with surges is they can destroy effectively randomly. One part of a machine may be fried but another may be fine.  It can skip a motherboard but fry the cpu on the motherboard for example.  This phenomena is why people pay money for well made PSUs and replace them regularly.  Electrical events like this come from the line end of things but can originate from either the outlet or a PSU going.  This is why people do extreme things to protect their line, though a lightning bolt will blow through basically everything and is very hard to protect from.  A PSU can still “work” after such a thing though it usually doesn’t.  If it was a line event it would have done other things too.  Clocks attached to the wall that didn’t have battery backup would possibly reset for example.  It is very possible your surge protector is toast and it is now basically just a switchable extension cord.  If it is not toast it is your PSU that went.

I got out the spare psu, now it wont even spin up the case fans. Think its a dead mobo.

Could be.  One never know what parts get fried in a power surge or if a PSU pops.

Ordered a new mobo and a psu tester to be safe

I’m not that impressed with what I’ve seen of PSU testers. They seem to be multipoint meters that have a green light for within 10% and a red light for not within 10%. They don’t say if something is getting close though.  If one was testing 40 PSUs or something they make a lot of sense of course because they’re so much faster.

Cool.  Never seen one like that.  May have to get one.  All I’ve ever seen is yes/no lights. What is the model?  I kinda want to look it up.

Ok i lied about the amps it was a glance at the image on amazon as i scrolled to the reviews.

Kingwin PC Computer Power Supply Tester, Digital LCD Screen, ATX/ITX/IDE/HDD/SATA/BYI (KPST-01) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VXSFXP1/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_K957C9G6S6D9GCADM2E5

Really just needed something that wouldnt have me staring at pin outs and other stupid bull while im trying to hold test leads in contact with the pins...i frustrate easily, and this should be good enough to tell me if magic smoke has escaped
