why is it that  this pc wont recognize  a seperate gpu?  the motherboard supports crossfire/sli if that even matters?  I am using  i7 950   w/ Radeon 6700xt on the main  x16 slot. the  i've tested with an  asus 3060ti and an 5600xt but wont recognize. i've also tried on the  pci 1x slot and nothing. same with  the other x16 slot since this one has 3(see attach  picture). the rise works when i use the main x16 slot  any thoughts would be great. thank you

I do have a p6t deluxe v2 crossflashed to p6x58d premium (also reccomend for your board cause tested sabertooth bios and it sucked ass compared to p6x58d premium bios overclock wise) and there is an option in the chipset menu or whatever it was called and theres a toggle in it that lets you run either 8x on both the 2nd and 3rd pcie slot or run the 2nd slot in x16 and 3rd in x1 if you are only using 2 gpus

Have a look at that toggle and see if changing it helps, id suggest trying both modes since its usually on auto

Personally cant test it cause my first pcie x16 slot is dead and i dont have enough IPA to attempt a fix by cleaning it (which is most likely why its dead

Btw retro build? Cause theres pretty much no reason to use quadcore nehalems when cheap hex core westmere xeons are like 10-20$

didnt know that is required? but will try that  and crossflash? as in flashing a diferrent bios into the board?  will have to look more into it and  dont want to brick anything. not a retro build lol just my first build I ever did  a decade ago  any westmere cpu recommendation if I ever want an upgrade?

Very easy since recovering from bricking your board is very easy cause asus has socketed bios chip that you can take out with a small screwdriver, for that particular board the bios is located near the front panel on the bottom left of the board, usually they are covered by a sticker that says warranty void but who gives a sht when its prob long gone by now xD , also p6x58d premium should work on any board for all i know, ive also heard of crossflash to p6t workstation boards but idk if those have any real advantage over the p6x58d bios

There are def gains from crossflashing cause flash my p5q to p5qd turbo made max fsb go from a pathetic 530 to a still measly 570fsb for bootable fsb, id also suggest trying the rampage iii extreme and formula bioses incase they work on your mobo cause mine just doesnt post with it and gets stuck on 0E code (i use a pci debug/post card, extremely useful for ocing and troubleshooting, usually marketed as pc analyzer)

Damn its been over 12 years, though ive also seen others keep theyre x58 that long on this forum

Id suggest the w series xeons cause better bin and pretty much just i7 extreme cpus in xeon form, have a look at the w3670/80, if not have a look at the e5649 or x5675 as those are refresh and should have better silicon aswell, though since you are prob not gonna be a nutjob like me and overclock your stuff to the moon heres what id reccomend when overclocking

Overclocking guide

Spoiler

Cpu vcore upto 1.55v (intel spec, doesnt matter as heat is usually gonna be alot more of an issue), for all i know they are as resiliant as 45nm so id personally take it to 1.7v but again heat issues, they die ~2.05v so dont go over 2v

Qpi aka vtt voltage upto 1.55v, for dailying stay 1.45v and under but you really dont need much more than 1.4v

Uncore freq id suggest running at 3800-4000mhz, stay ~3800 though since it starts needing crap tons of volt to go any higher, usually acheivable with ~1.4v for 3800 and ~1.5v for 4000mhz

qpi freq just set lowest multi since ideal bclk is 200 and above, dont set slowmode tho cause that literally makes the thing super slow xD

Dram volt stay 0.5v within qpi volt so if you set 1.5v qpi you can run 2v dram volt

Ideal bclk is 200+ cause low bclk is stupid to run and x58 benifits from high bclk, though for bclk above 220 run 115 pcie

Pll volt just leave it at 1.8v, ideally would be 1.35-1.5v but asus bios sucks as per usual

Ioh volt is prob fine upto 1.6v since its 65nm so ill just use 775 intel spec, irl you dont need much more than 1.3v for a normal oc between 200-220bclk

Ioh pcie just leave that at 1.5v as i havent seen any benifits from raising it

Ich voltages just max them, it might help with lessening those stupid nonpaged area bsods

Clock skews just run cpu at 100ps and ioh at 0ps

Clock overcharging just leave at 700mv but might help for 230+ bclk

Personally i dont run llc cause it needs more vcore than non llc but you do you for that setting

There are some missing settings like qpi pll but thats just cause asus bios sucks but thats from an ocer that ocs the balls off his hardware, for normal oc its a good bios since it shouldnt allow you to kill anything even if you max the volts and its noob firendly unlike some other bioses (looking at you gigabyte)

Also do not hesitate raising voltages except when you start getting really close to somewhat unsafe voltages, overly conservative volts = garbage oc
