Leaked publicity materials for the next iPhone, seen by various tech publications including this one, make reference to the return of the connector, which Apple apparently intends to brand as the "AirPlay Wired Port", though it will be a standard 3.5mm headphone connector.

The materials also make reference to the benefits of the connector - most notably, the fact that, for the first time in years, iPhone users can listen to music through headphones without needing to recharge them. A new range of "battery-free AirPods" will be released at the same time, with the lack of the battery touted not only for its convenience but also for the environmental benefits of minimising use of rare earth metals.

It is uncertain if the old battery powered AirPods will remain on sale, but if they do, expect a hefty discount to reflect that they are no longer the latest and greatest technology, making them substantially cheaper than the battery-free ones.

Apple have been approached for comment, but declined to provide a spokesperson. In a written statement, they neither confirmed nor denied the leaks.

My thoughts

Hopefully we see other major smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, Nokia and Blackberry following suit with this. It looks like a good move for the industry overall.
