So I've owned a Lenovo Legion Y720 which I purchased in 2018 and it's been holding up well until recently. It started to perform quite poorly in many games despite the fact that I exceed the recommended hardware requirements. I regularly clean the laptop inside so I don't think overheating is an issue. So I was wondering if this is age of the hardware at this point or could it be a recently installed update or something. I'd like any and all possible advice on what I can do to test my theory. Thank you in advance.

Just check the temps with something like openhardwaremonitor during gaming. A 2018 laptop by now has a good chance of having dried up thermal paste.

Also a 4 year old windows install does not hurt to be reinstalled but first lets check temps.

The CPU/GPU temps go up to 70-80 degrees when I play pretty much anything. I did actually reinstall my Windows about 1.5 year ago and reapplied thermal paste about 2 years ago as well. I didn't consider repasting this year because last time I opened it up it was still sort of moist.

how many background applications you have running?

what's the spec? what's the CPU/GPU usage like in games? what are the temps?

130~ for background and 140~ for windows applications. Temps wary between 70-80C. CPU usage is usually at around 60%+ and GPU is anywhere between 30-70%.

and RAM?

that's a pretty low spec computer in today's standard, btw, 4 years is a lot in tech especially the past 4 years when CPU have been competitive and GPU hasnt stopped improving either

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately
