Hi,

 

today I noticed weird severe issues on my PC (lags, screen flashes when opening the start menu on win10, CRC errors unzipping files, boot problems) and deducted, that I might have bad Memory.

I have two matched 2133 MHz Crucial sticks (1,25V/1,2V), each 8GB, installed on a MSI Z170A G45 Gaming Mainboard running an i7 6700. 

Several memtests later (tested each stick individually in each slot) I found out, that each stick has exactly one bit on one address, that is faulty (Address 0x76B6CE80 on Module 1 and 0x1858F678 on Module 2 to be exact). For each stick, the addresses were always the same in all slots.

I now ordered new memory. What I find weird is, that those two bit caused such severe errors on the system and that failures on two sticks were detected at the same time.
 

Do you think, there might be something hiding beneath the memory problem?

I had bluescreen issues for several weeks now, probably the RAM corrupted my system over time and led to this strange behavior that I experienced today. Or maybe the second stick just went bad today, causing these issues.

Maybe, but I'd see if the new RAM fixes it first and then troubleshoot further if needed.

So, the issues were likely caused by bad RAM. The new RAM works fine. When I enable XMP though, I have graphical glitches while running Memtest (WTF?). Monitor is plugged into motherboard, no graphics card installed for test.

My assumption now is, that probably the power supply is causing this. It is the oldest part of the computer and probably not as stable any more. Maybe it is the reason for the old bad RAM.

When I run memtest without XMP though, I have no issues.
