I recently got my hands on an old pc with an i5 2320, someone I know is in the market for a basic one c for their work and I figured that I could harvest the cpu and other components from an old prebuilt I inherited from my father after I built him a new one, the prebuilt however has a non standard motherboard, now assuming there is no budget constraint, can someone pls tell me what chipset does a motherboard need flot run 2nd gen? I believe there are multiple that will work along with the 1155 socket but idk what they are and which one I should get, Pls help?

Imagine everything i have written in a Linus Voice/ linus tone (Spock live long and prosper gif here ,idk why tho, i guess i just want to say that i like star trek and am waiting for new seasons of the ongoing shows), But seriously, a lot of what i type only makes sense when said in a Linus tone from an older ltt video (circa 2017-2019 & now 2024-onwards) basically before he got a beard and a lot of it should make sense even in a Linus with a beard face.

also note as per the latest typing test on my laptop, my accuracy is 69%

I'm not weird/creepy, I'm just observant I have ADHD and am not on any meds for it because I don't want to and don't need to be on meds. i also may just be depressed. If you find other things around you depressing, are you depressed or are you surrounded by depressing things?

As it's not an Enterprise chipset designed specifically for Xeons like the C series, if the CPU fits, it'll work. Just be warned that budget really is an issue for this system, as 1155 boards aren't super cheap since they're at the point in their lives where they're starting to die out, and it might actually be cheaper to just buy a newer CPU and board in general.

I mean for 100$ you can buy a i5 3470 +8gb of ram + ssd system from ebay. So don't overspend you'll get something worse.

Some cheap crappy h61 boards should do.

Is there a b series or equivalent chipset for 2nd gen? Also just in general as I seem to be dealing with this stuff a lot, what are all the chipsets that are compatible with 2nd gen intel

Any lga1155 socket board will work. Be warned these boards often cost as much as an entire system with the same or better cpu you have.

It was the 60 and 70 series, so H61, B65, H67, Z67, B75, H77, and Z77. There were a few boards listed as "H71," but they're just rebranded H61

So chipsets went 50,60,70,80,90,100,200,300,400,500,600 series for intel? Huh they seem

to have missed a few numbers there why did they stop using 10’s for their chipsets and switch to 100’s

I'm guessing because they wanted to keep the XYZ naming scheme they had before. For example: H61, B65, H67, and Z67 - meaning (chipset type)(generation)(feature level). So H61 is for Home use, 60 series chipset generation, and is at the lowest feature level, just 1. When they got to 100 series, they had two choices:

They could've done H101, B105, H107, and Z107, with the next generation having B115, H117, and Z117, or they could just keep the naming scheme going and throw a 0 on the end. They chose the latter. So H110, B150, H170, and Z170 with the next generation being the 200 series.
