Hello, came into a little money for my birthday and wanting an upgrade,I have an idea of what I want but having trouble deciding so I thought I'd ask opinions on the LTT forum

So with my given budget I can get a 5800x now or I could get faster larger capacity memory now and upgrade the CPU next year and get myself a nice 5900x or 5950x for cheaper while everyone else is looking into the new gen

Any thoughts from the community appreciated, what would you do?

Thanks 😊

Budget ($350):

Country: usa

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Doom, valhiem,Fl studio, maschine

Other details

Currently

CPU:3700x

16Gb 3200 MHz Corsair memory

X470 strix mobo

Gpu:5600xt

Hard drive/SSD:WD blue 2Tb mech, WD blue 500Gb m.2 SSD, WD blue 500Gb nvme

Monitor: 1080p 144hz

Ryzen 5800X3D(Because who doesn't like a phat stack of cache?) GPU - 7700Xt

                                                           X470 Strix f gaming, 32GB Corsair vengeance, WD Blue 500GB NVME-WD Blue2TB HDD, 700watts EVGA Br

~Extra L3 cache is exciting, every time you load up a new game or program you never know what your going to get, will it perform like a 5700x or are we beating the 14900k today? 😅~

Flip the GPU and get an RX 6700XT or maybe a 3070. For just gaming, getting a faster CPU won't make much of a difference, and a better GPU would be much better.

Thanks for the input

Was thinking along those lines to but I'm a heavy multi tasker, not uncommon for me to have game running with Daw open on the second screen with crazy audio processing going back n forth between game and editing, that's the reason I was thinking cpu or memory so I don't have to close plugins when things get sluggish or risk crashing my game or projects

just my opinion, but i don't think either of those upgrades is worth doing. if it were me, i would just save the money for a more worthwhile upgrade.

What would you want to upgrade/upgrade to if you had my current setup?

OK, then go 6700XT and spend $50 on another 16GB. The performance improvements you'd see going for much faster RAM is basically nothing, and the faster CPU won't make that too much better.

🤔 If I flipped my 5600xt combine with what I have would be roughly $700

3070's and 6700xt's are still floating  $800 to $1k aren't they?

Oh cool 😎

You don't think my 3700x would bottle neck a 6700xt?

Nope. 3700X's were fine with up to 2080 Tis, and the 6700XT is in between a 2080 Super and a 2080 Ti, so it's a pretty good pairing.

Plus remember that AMD's drivers do very well with lower end CPUs, so it's even less likely to be a bottleneck.

I agree on the GPU upgrade.

The Ryzen 5800X isn't a worthwhile upgrade over the 3700X, it's the same number of cores that are 10-20% stronger depending on the tasks.

If you're multitasking a lot, a 5900X is a way better option.

A 3700X won't bottleneck the 6700XT. I know it first hand since I tested a setup like that and a friend of mine is using it since last August.

But he's running 1440p 144Hz + 2x 1080p60.

Have you considered a monitor upgrade?

Also, there are cases when there would be benefits from more than 16GB RAM. That's a worth upgrade. The same RAM, just more of it.
