hi guys i have a question, im about to upgrade my gpu and cpu to a MSI radeon 6900XT gaming X trio together with a i9 12900k now my question is if my corsair RM 850W is enough power to support it?

p.s im not going to overclock anything.

thanks in advance already!

12900k is a thermonuclear reactor though if you arent ocing itll be fine, though i do suggest ocing gpu as thats where most of the visible gains are

Btw if you arent ocing cpu then get a cheap z690 cause vrms even on low end z690 should still be enough for a 12900k, only reason to get a higher end board is more i/o since cpu oc is dead (ryzen/i 7 and up)

yeah im thinking of getting of getting a MSI MPG Z690 EDGE WIFI DDR4 with a Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black cooler im not going to OC anything indeed. well thanks guys i was hoping my current power supply was good enough since i just have it for 2 years only.  guess the future upgrade of that will be towards a 1000w, just to be sure the 850 is just fine or will it be close? because if its close its ofc also kinda edgy then i think i would rather invest in a new one of 1000w but yeah like i said if its more than fine if u dont OC then 100% i just keep it!

thanks again for helping this noob! 😄

I think it will be fine as long as you don't plan on overclocking and don't have a crap ton of RGB fans and hard drives. It will be close to 850w, so while I think it will work, it might be better to upgrade. Why not just give it a try?

nope i only have 3 fans in the front and 1 in the back and 2x m.2 nVme 1tb SSD and 1 normal 1tb HDD and 0 RGB besides my GPU then and my keyboard/mouse.

I think it should be fine, probably about 700w under load so it will be close but not too close.

If you want to lower power draw a bit you could always try undervolting since you don't oc. This will also help components live longer and make fans quieter and components cooler.

Nah you can prob use that 850w till it dies in a decade or so, and yea since the 12900k is a thermonuclear reactor and the gpu also guzzles alot of power itll be pretty close but not that close

Uhhhhhhhhh u12s will just die if you try cooling a 12900k with it, go for a drp4 or nhd15 cause i aint kidding when i say the 12900k is a thermonuclear reactor

To reduce power consumption and temps you can undervolt the 12900k so maybe 4.8g-5g 1.2v on the p cores

The z690 edge wifi looks to be a dressed up z690a wifi with more aesthetic appeal and integrated i/o shield, do not pay more than a 20$ markup for the edge when compared to the z690a wifi

Buy a real cooler for 12900K. U12S is within margin of error when compared to 30-40$ single towers from other manufacturers. D15 is a good cooler although pricey when compared to Scythe Fuma 2, Deepcool ak620 or Arctic liquid freezer II 240/280/360.

Probably more than enough.  But since you already have the PSU, there's no reason to at least try it.  Not like it's going to burst into flames. 😄

@masterash As well as Deepcool Assassin III, Jonsbo HX7280, Thermalright Frost Commander 140, Cooler Master MasterAir MA624 Stealth, Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, Zalman CNPS20X, ID-Cooling SE-207-XT on top of the other great mentioned above by @Jeppes

Deepcool Assassin III is the highest confirmed (GamersNexus) performing one of all of them. While Jonsbo HX7280 is the latest to launch, and probably the sleekest looking. (It's also the closest to the Assassin III performance on paper (7 heatpipes, 2x140mm fans). In practice though performance unknown. The highest quality tooling/machining base finish might be ID-Cooling, while the most technologically advanced overall is Thermalright FC 140 (tied with Noctua NH-D15S).

Either way if history ends up repeating itself everyone is on borrowed time until later this year, early next when Phanteks shows up (unless Noctua suprises us).

hmm yeah alright think ill play it safe and get a noctua D15 then, im old school and i just cant build trust for a watercooler system without the fear of it leaking one day although i know there are excellent AIO's out there, ill just play it safe and get the noctua D15  ( i did the measurements but still fingers crossed my ram cards have plenty of room in there  ^^ )

@masterashBe sure to check motherboard compatibility on the Noctua website with their tool. Half of the Asus Z690 boards can't fit NH-D15, but can fit NH-D15S (because of too tall VRM cooler to the top of the board, and too tall cooler to the left towards USB-ports).

And there are some motherboards that can't fit NH-D15 to the bottom towards the GPU because of too close PCI-E slot (but fit NH-D15S no problem).

RAM should generally be fine, Noctua has one of the highest RAM cut-outs out of all the other coolers.

If u want the utmost performance, with the longest customer support (and widest world-spanning as well), and the greatest possible motherboard, ram, and gpu compatibility available in the world atm, along with the greatest fan compatibility potential for the future (changing to 140x30mm fans) then Noctua NH-D15S is what you're looking for.

That's the conclusion I came to a few years back, researching for myself. NH-D15S now and a fan swap later this year, early next, with the new LCP Phanteks T30-140 fan, or the new LCP Noctua NF-A14x25 (or dare we dream x30 xD).

oh snap u were right i have corsair vengeance LPX ram sticks and its indeed not compatible with the NH D15 unless u highten it because the ram sticks are too chunky and stick out a bit in the middle, thats a super tip u gave! i immediately swapped the DH15 on my list for the DH15S , thanks again 😄

@masterashIt's also possible to move the fan to the back of the heatsink (if u got room in the case of course, but if u had trouble with height with the LPX ram, it's probably too tight in your case). NH-D15S is a much better choice for starters (that u can put smaller fans on later on, depending on your case, ram and so on.

What case are you building in ?

my ''old'' case only got it for 2 years though but it says its big enough for it all although i think the DH15 would be very close to fit im using a '' Antec P82 Flow ''

but i might update and get a new even bigger or smoother case, do u have any tips for good cases to build all this in if i may decide to swap case aswell

i have my eyes on the corsair 7000D for a small while aswell if i would replace it i like space and room but not sure if its 100% worth it ^^
