Hi there,

I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my current gaming PC, see below specs. I'm looking to spend around 1,500 euro and mainly use it for gaming and media consumption. Currently running two HP Omen 144Hz monitors but I would like to transition to an ultra-wide display of some kind. I also have a cooler master case which I would like to change up.

GPU: GeForce GTX 1080

RAM: 16GB (2x 8 GB) DDR4

It's a little over budget but would be a great upgrade. Also make sure your PC supports a standard ATX PSU. You might get away with 650w but that depends on the quality of the unit, which is often questionable in prebuilts.

Edit: also check for yourself if you can get a 3080/6800 XT/6900 XT for cheaper. PCPP often doesn't list all options for GPU's. Don't know why but it happens.

I can always recommend the bequiet cases, only made great building and using experiences with them.

Pre builts don't tend to have the highest quality PSUs, maybe that's an interesting upgrade to you.

Other than that: If you want to upgrade your GPU you would need to spend the majority of your money on it. Maybe an RTX 3080? The i7-8700 is still a great chip and should be able to handle that (at 4K gaming, 1080p would be a CPU bottleneck!)

But now, fellow gamers, that was it for me. Please keep in mind, that this is just my personal opionion and I am no expert. Your system shall be cooled forever, see you next time.

Ooo that's a tough one. If you upgrade the GPU, the CPU will feel wholly inadequate. If you upgrade the CPU, the GPU would seem under powered for it.

You could go with what @Pixelfie recommended. However, it would be an unbalanced build because the 8700 is essentially a entry level CPU now and you are pairing it with a high end GPU. You can try it out. If it feels alright for you, then stick with it.

I'd actually recommend keeping it for maybe 1-2 more years and saving the money to make a complete system upgrade.

Actually the bottleneck isn't too bad.

It's really depends on the person and games you play. While the average fps for 8700 vs let's say a 10700 or 5800x is about the same, the 1% lows, frame pacing and timing will be worst. This translates to frame stutters, and worst smoothness in games. Unfortunately, no real benchmarks to show this.

For example, I had a Ryzen 3 3100 and was playing monster hunter world and upgraded to a 5800X later down the line. The average FPS didn't really change, but damn the game play was way smoother, and I had less frame stutters. Yes, it does hit all 8 cores at times too. I run a 5600xt btw.

Something to note about how I recommend things as well is I like balanced builds. Putting a 3080 on a 8700 is effectively putting a 12400 on 3080. Yes it works, but seems a little silly to put such a high powered GPU with an entry level CPU. Would be similar to putting an i3-8100 with a gtx 1080 back in the day. Yes, it works, but not ideal.
