Hi community,

(Hope this post lands in the right place and hasn't been asked 10^9 times already)

I'm looking for any recommendations for Rgb keyboard that has programmable Rgb per key. (do such wonders exist?)

I'm jumping from a familiar brushed metal platform to a self build project for music/audio and some video editing duties.  Keyboard shortcuts are a heavily used so I would like to have a keyboard that allows me to change individual key backlight/Rgb colour to show application specific key commands (coloured key maps I would assume)?

This is off the back of this new self build/migration project- My last self build was back in the days of MB PATA drives so feel free to guess my hair colour 🤣

The new rig isn't necessarily a gaming rig but if you advice on keyboard types too that would also be greatly appreciated?

cheers  😎

your question isn't clear. how deep should the customization be? all key macros and individual key lighting is a standard feature on pretty much all brand name gamer boards.
corsair, razer, lg, even EVGA or Steelseries.

you're basically just picking your poison for the control software.

if you want deeper layer stuff like each macro layer having it's own lighting profile, I think corsair does that.
if it also needs to dynamically changing through multiple actions I'm not sure if anything prebuilt does it. they don't have a reason to dev a feature 2 people will use.

If you're exclusively asking about custom build keyboard you can make the firmware do what ever you want with pretty little programming needed, you only need to pick something with a controller that you know supports the macro and RGB stuff on basic level and add the rest yourself.

Primary System

  • CPU
    Ryzen R6 5700X
  • Motherboard
    MSI B350M mortar arctic
  • RAM
    32GB Corsair RGB 3600MT/s CAS18
  • GPU
    Zotac RTX 3070 OC
  • Case
    kind of a mess
  • Storage
    WD black NVMe SSD 500GB & 1TB samsung Sata ssd & x 1TB WD blue & x 3TB Seagate
  • PSU
    corsair RM750X white
  • Display(s)

Ok - I'm no expert with the whole RGB thing which tbh is something I've never really investigated so have previously assumed this to be a 'just for show' feature with modern game rigs.  (Forgive me - I'm old school 😄)

But regarding how deep customisation should be:  If I load an application say DAW software, or something like an NLE for video, will any RGB keyboard allow me to highlight/illuminate individual keys that are tied to specific shortcuts.  ie, in an NLE for example, Keyboard shortcuts for Transport keys could all be Blue, shortcuts for Zoom keys could all be green...

I don't think the illumination would need to dynamically change based on user input operations - just fixed in terms of the application being used.

Or is this kind of thing only applicable to certain manufactures products where as you say their Control Software is potentially the limiting factor?

I'm really only looking for manufacture/model recommendations at this point so I can investigate further - as I say, I'm old school and an 'RGB noob'.  Probably using the wrong terms too.
(Cue the Grampa Simpson voice: "I remember in our day we had Vinyl overlays")

Building a custom keyboard is something I have not considered but feel this would probably be a no go at this point - I much prefer the standard keyboard shortcut methods.

Cheers  8)

My Ducky One 2, for example, has at least 2 static-RGB lighting modes that you can customize.  By default one had WADS keys illuminated.  So if you wanted to only light up specific keys, or at least illuminate those specific keys a different color--that's easy to do.  So if you wanted, say 4 blue keys, 6 green keys, 10 red keys, and the rest white--you could do that.
