I'm trying to get a new pc case because my old Alienware x51 r3 is having cooling issues. It has an Intel Core i7-6700k and I'm having troubles looking for a motherboard that will work with it. The main problem with the x51 is noise. It gets really noisy from both the air flow issues and probably the fact that it is 5+ years old. I want to put all of my old parts into a new case with better airflow, but I'm not sure if I can fit the x51's motherboard into one so I want to get a new motherboard, and maybe a better one at that. The case I want to get is the NZXT H510 Compact. The x51 also has a gtx960 and some Alienware watercooler that I'm not entirely sure the model name of, if you needed that info...

Any suggestions for products that aren't too expensive will be greatly appreciated. :)

You need to be looking for Z170 or Z270 chipset boards. They've all been out of production for years of course so you'll have to turn to eBay, etc.

If your goal is better airflow then the H510, while doubtless an improvement on the console-esque Alienware chassis, would not be my first choice.

So I should try to look for a new cpu as well as a case?

How much do you want to spend?

A current i3 will probably exceed the performance of your 6700k.

Hit up eBay and look for a decent used Z170 board, though if you don’t intend to overclock, Q170/H170 or B150 are also good choices.

The cooler should mount to any board fine, it’s not chassis mounted, but I don’t think it’ll work very well as it’s a strange blower AIO kind of thing that seems to rely on a lot of ducting and direct airflow into the blowers intake.

Personally I’d just take the 6700k, ram, drives, and gtx 960 and build it in a new system with a new psu, motherboard, cooler and case.

I agree, I was planning on getting a new motherboard and case, and I guess a new cooler, because this one is loud, and putting them along with the old stuff. The problem is I don't know if the i7-6700 is compatible or not with newer boards.

The 6700 is compatible with LGA 1151 (first version, with chipsets numbered in the 100's and 200's) boards. it is not compatible with anything newer (including the second version of the LGA 1151 socket, with chipsets numbered in the 300's).

I think moving to a new platform would be a good idea, an i3 12100 will obliterate a 6700k while being cheaper

If you just need a case swap then you might have to mod the case if the board is proprietary garbage, otherwise move to a new platform
