Softraid is fine, at least you're not stuck with hardware that can fail out leaving you with no choice but to get the same hardware again or lose the data. Many moons ago on a core2duo I benchmarked both soft and hard raid on win7, very minor speed difference and very minor CPU use.

 

 

If your libraries have a lot of small files zip them at zero compression for faster transfer.
