How to read ethernet with oscilloscope?

Hello, I have a Tektromnix 2335 100Mhz oscilloscope and I am trying to read the signal on a cat 5e ethernet cable at 10BaseT. Currently it looks like this IMG_0953.thumb.jpeg.0c5c0192437da811d00d7a24aacc63d3.jpeg

 

It's connected to the orange wire pair, which should be sending data, but the signal doesn't appear to change so I think I'm using the oscilloscope wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

What's your ground lead attached to?

 

Edit: You said it's connected to the orange wire pair so I'm going to assume you have ground lead attached to either orange, or white/orange. Since ethernet is a differentially driven physical layer, both wires are actively being driven to a voltage level.

 

Most scopes connect the ground lead directly to mains earth. If that's the case, you're effectively shunting the ethernet signal to mains earth, this could cause all kinds of funky behaviour in your measurements such as shifted voltages, ringing, or just plain unusable measurements.

That makes sense as the ethernet wasn't properly initializing and the indicator lights on the port were randomly turning on and off. So would a differential probe fix this?

Yep, that's typically what a differential probe should be used for. It isolates the probe from the scope (and thus mains earth) and allows you to measure the signal between any two points.

If your scope has math functions, you can use the A-B function and connect both probes to one of the wires of one pair and connect their ground to the shielding ot the ethernet cable.

 

With your scope this should be possible by using the vertical mode "add" and invterting channel two, which functionally is A-B.

 

And make sure you use proper probes. If you only have the normal X10 probes, use them in X10 mode, because almost all of them can only go up to their maximum frequency in X10 mode, in X1 mode, they usually are only useful up to 1...3MHz.
