Create Raid 0 and Moving Programs

I have 2 identical drives that I want to combine into a RAID 0 array, however one of the drive holds most of the programs installed on my machine (neither drive holds my OS).

 

My plan was to copy everything on that drive to another location, combine the drives and then move everything onto the combined drives.

 

Will this break anything? Is there a better way to do this?

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.

He/Him - I'm a PhD student working in the fields of reinforcement learning and traffic control. Yes this could certainly break stuff. Keys in the registry could break, especially when changing drive letters fx. I would reinstall everything after setting up the Raid 0 configuration.

Actually no, nothing would break, as long as you are not running any of the programs that are on those disks. My advice would be to copy / backup the programs-disk, reboot into safe mode to reformat and create the software RAID, then change the drive letter back to the original for the RAID0 drive. All the registry keys and shortcuts will point back to the same drive letter, which will just have more storage.

It should be all fine as long as you really copy everything including hidden files and anything that may be "system" or requiring admin privileges to access, then copy it back and make sure the drive letter of the RAID is the same.

I'm pretty certain that there are no system files on the drive, anything integral to windows is on my separate OS drive. As for hidden files, none appears on the root directory when "show hidden items" is ticked so copying everything in there should work, I assume there isn't some more hidden way that windows can hide files?

Yeah true, I kinda was talking about the drive letters but I see how I did not explain anything really. But good comment 🙂
