DisplayPort no signal when using power strip

Leglessmatt

Hi!

hoping someone can prove I’m not being stupid…others have tried and failed 😉

I have a laptop linked to a Dell 32 inch monitor via a usbc to displayport cable (usbc on laptop end).

I was receiving ‘no signal from displayport connection’ or similar recently.  Tried various laptops/cables/etc.

I think I’ve narrowed it down to the power supply to the monitor.  If the monitor is plugged into a surge strip (six gang with all plugs used) the no signal error occurs - tried plugging it directly into the wall and it seeeeems to work fine.

other sources connected to the HDMI socket on the monitor always work fine (power strip and/or directly into the wall).

can displayport ports / monitors work like this? Surely if there was not enough power then the monitor just wouldn’t turn on? I’m guessing displayport uses ‘more power’ hence its not working when hdmi sources do…or does anyone think the monitor is possibly on its way out?

cheers,

Matt

i've had some terrible luck with displayport on dell displays, especially in combination with dell cables.

no explanation for this, but what ended up working for me was i disconnected the earth lead from the display's power connector, and it got MUCH more stabile.

as for the propper fix, i've had enough facepalm with dell cables that i'd rather suggest that if you're using the dell supplied DP cable, you best stop using the dell supplied DP cable...

Might be time to look for another power strip maybe. 😮
