Do you like the new design of Windows?

  1. 1. Do you prefer the look of windows 10 or windows 11

win10 gui was actually pretty good for a windows integer update.  It was other parts of it that were extremely disturbing.I haven’t seen any significant changes to the 11 gui.  The bad stuff in win10 seems to have gotten worse in win11 though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Personally, I think that the windows 10 design was just fine, but I also haven’t really used windows 11 yet. I also don’t appreciate how they cut off a lot of older machines with their support.

Windows 10 had a design?!

I guess "Windows GUI museum heritage site" is a design.

I mean, the thing about windows 10 design is that it had some of the older design elements from windows past, but I feel like windows 10 also brought more modern things to the table. I think Microsoft should offer the option to go back to the windows 10 ui, kind of like how one windows 7, they had an option to go back to the classic windows interface. Something like that, idk

If enough people think so it won’t even be stoppable.  People have done apps in the past to do just that for other integer builds.

I don't know why, but something about the Win11 design is just slightly off-putting to me. Still, nothing could possibly look more dull (and ugly, I guess) than the title bars on Windows 10.

Highly knowledgeable in all the obscure 2000s hardware & software you'll never need to ask about

I really like how Windows 11 looks overall. The right click menu and centered taskbar look nice, but the second right click menu is practically horrible. The centered taskbar requires retraining muscle memory, but is not a big deal. Windows 10, in my opinion, looks kinda disgusting. I can't really put my finger on why though.

From win98 on windows integer updates have been attempts to ape apple generally, but for whatever reason they tend to not do it very well.  Art about art almost always looks weird. They do occasionally come up with a good original idea.  It’s happened a few times. You want to know what a windows UI is going to look like though look at a 5-10 year old Mac. The right click thing is particularly telling.  Macs don’t have right-click so that was all Microsoft.

The second menu is really a "deprecated menu". It's there for app compatibility (and Windows itself) to the new menu system

It is used as a way to clean up the menu (Windows side and apps). It also aims to fix performance issue that the old context menu has, especially when it comes to poorly coded apps adding entries to the menu (making menu slow to show). You can read more here: https://blogs.windows.com/blog/2021/07/19/extending-the-context-menu-and-share-dialog-in-windows-11/). Of course, the down side of the new approach, is that the menu  is dynamically loading entries now, so the menu position and size can change while being displayed. An effect more notable on slow systems. Hopefully, it will put pressure on app developers to optimize their shit, so that it appears instantly.

Did they fix the fact that in win10, checking for updates takes forever, even on a fast internet connection? I haven’t had a chance to mess around with win11 yet.

Windows Update compares files between local and server. And is part of reason why your CPU usage goes up.

If you enable to check for other Microsoft products (Office), it will take more time.

Windows update isn't a simple: "What build to do you have? What build is on the server? Yours is older? Ok fetch update.exe and run it".

Not all updates in Windows delivered might be installed. So there is a complex process that takes place.
